Sr. Mary James “Gus” Griffin, OP, dies

SINSINAWA — Sr. Mary James “Gus” Griffin, OP, died May 29, 2017, at St. Dominic Villa. The funeral Mass was held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, June 2, 2017, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.

Sister Gus made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1962, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1967. She taught for 13 years, served as a pastoral minister for 12 years, and ministered in social services and housing assistance for 26 years. She served in South Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and Mississippi.

In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Gus taught at St. Joseph School, Baraboo, 1965-1971, and St. Cecilia School, Wisconsin Dells, 1972-1973.

Sister Gus was born July 7, 1941, in Oak Park, Ill., the daughter of James and Grace (Cusack) Griffin. Her parents preceded her in death. She is survived by two sisters, Sr. Marie Malachy Griffin, OP, and Jean Crimmins; nieces; nephews; grandnieces; grandnephews; and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared 54 years of religious life.
