St. Thomas More Society to host annual meeting and Feast Day Mass

On November 30, 2011January 23, 2025
--

MADISON — St. Thomas More was a king’s trusted advisor, a man dedicated to his faith, and a lawyer who gave up his wealth, his good name, and the security of his family to follow his conscience. For his heroic efforts, he is revered and it is in order to try to emulate him that St. Thomas More Societies were founded.

Catholic lawyers, judges, and others engaged in the judicial system meet to discuss ethical, philosophical, and moral issues of their professions. The Madison group has sponsored continuing legal ethics classes, the Red Mass to inspire all to work for greater justice, and various informational meetings.

On the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (a holy day of obligation), Thursday, Dec. 8, the St. Thomas More Society invites all Catholic lawyers, judges, and others to attend Mass. Mass, where all are welcome, begins at 5:30 p.m., at St. Patrick Church, 404 E. Main St., Madison. The brief annual meeting and election of officers and reception with heavy hors d’oeurves will follow in the parish hall for members and paid guests.

Plans for the coming year include multiple continuing legal education classes with an ethical focus and more interaction with UW law students. Giving young lawyers and law students an informal venue to discuss practicing law as a faithful Catholic will be a primary goal.

Judges, government officials, lawyers, and those engaged in the judicial system are invited to join or renew their membership for $50. Members have no additional cost for the reception. The reception is $10 for non-members and $5 for law students. Send checks made out to “St. Thomas More Society” by Friday, Dec. 2, to Deb O’Brien, DeWitt, Ross and Stevens, S.C., 2 East Mifflin St., Ste. 600, Madison, WI 53703-2865.
