Renovated student chapel blessed in Platteville

On September 26, 2013

PLATTEVILLE — A new era at St. Augustine University Catholic Parish began on September 8 when Bishop Robert C. Morlino of Madison blessed the recently-renovated chapel.

The project lasted all summer and “was well worth it,” according to parish development director Carly Hood.

The project came to life from the suggestions of parishioners. Hood met with many of them back in December when she first moved to the area.

“One comment that stood out during our conversations was the desire to have the old paneling taken down. Our paneling was a bit outdated, and very dark,” said Hood. “Discussions of brightening the chapel began, and while this occurred, several parishioners and friends came forward to offer their support and assistance, and also to suggest additional changes.”

Volunteers help out

The work started the Monday after the feast of Corpus Christi back in late May.

Hood says volunteers worked “day and night” on the chapel.

The walls were completely redone, including those around the altar, giving the area more space.

A new, second sacristy was created out of the old confessional. One holds all garments; the other contains all religious items.

Once the walls were complete, a new riser was built. It extends from one side of the wall to the other, allowing for more room up near the altar.

New altars were customized to fit the size of the chapel.

The high altar features a baldaquino — a structure over the altar — with a light in it. A cross sits there at every moment except during Eucharistic Adoration. Then a monstrance is placed inside, making it appear as though the host is glowing from the altar.

“It is incredibly beautiful and awe inspiring,” said Hood.

The project was funded by donors. The altars, drywall, paint, construction, statues, and tile were all donated, and many of them in-kind.

“I remember the first day when one of our parishioners showed up with boxes of drywall and tools,” said Hood. “We are very blessed here at St. Augustine to have so many generous and loving supporters.”

She added almost every person who donated, either in kind or through a financial donation, also acted as a volunteer “getting his or her hands dirty and making the dream a reality.”

“Parishioners and volunteers were the heart of this project,” said Hood, including many from other parishes in the surrounding area.

The St. Augustine University Parish chapel is located at 135 S Hickory St. in Platteville.

The parish provides campus ministry for UW-Platteville. It offers spiritual development, education, service, and leadership opportunities with and for students, staff, faculty, and resident parishioners.
