Be a saint and challenge evil

All of us bear wounds inflicted by others: Painful conflicts, harsh judgments, hurtful comments, rejections of proffered love and friendship, lack of gratitude and support, embarrassing humiliations, experiences of being ignored or overlooked.

No pork hock and sauerkraut dinner this year

MADISON — No pork hock and sauerkraut dinner will be held this year in the St. James Church basement.

The annual event that started decades ago with sauerkraut made by former Dane County Sheriff John Haas is taking a year off.

Haas’ son John continued the tradition of making the sauerkraut and offering it to the parish for the dinner usually held in February or March.

Remembering one of the best days ever

kevin-editorial

As I am looking at the calendar for October of 2020, and seeing we have a Friday, Oct. 16, coming up, I’m asking myself — How has it been five years already?

The last time October 16 fell on a Friday was in 2015.

My parish, St. Maria Goretti (SMG) in Madison, and the Diocese of Madison as a whole, had one of its most eventful days ever.

Happy belated feast day, St. Faustina!

kevin-editorial

Dear St. Faustina,

By now you’re probably aware of me.

It’s me, Kevin, the guy who has this devotion to you and to Divine Mercy and can get quite nerdy about it.

Ever since I first read about you and what the message of Divine Mercy is, I was hooked.

God can shape us into who we are called to be, no matter the challenge

A startling truth that struck me as a young priest was the number of people I encountered in the parish who struggled with chronic depression, anxiety, chemical imbalances, a borderline personality, or other forms of psychological and mental challenges.

Many of them were married, held jobs, volunteered in the parish, and were remarkably productive but suffered profound anguish in their minds and hearts.

Sadly, a taboo still clings to psychological illness.

Most people can talk about cancer, heart conditions, and medical treatments of all kinds, but problems of the mind are often feared and denied.

‘Ridiculous’ to remove St. Junípero Serra

I have just received word that, after voting to remove a large statue of St. Junípero Serra that stands in front of their City Hall, the government of Ventura, Calif, (which is in my pastoral region) is now considering removing the image of Padre Serra from the city seal and from the badges of the Ventura police officers.

JANESVILLE — The Encounter Ministries’ School of Healing will be held at St. William Parish, 456 N. Arch St., Janesville.
