The eyes of faith see what human eyes cannot

One of the most powerful gifts of the Mass and other Sacramental celebrations is that we encounter Christ face-to-face.

Death from a Catholic perspective

Hying Logo

Beginning this month, a new series of articles will appear in our newspaper to offer catechesis and formation concerning end of life decisions, dying, death, funerals, and burial of the dead from our Catholic perspective.

No one easily faces these issues because they remind us of our mortality and fragility, but our faith in Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, helps us understand how our own death, ending an earthly existence lived out in faith, hope, and charity, becomes the sacred passage to eternal joy in the Kingdom of Heaven.

The Church encourages us to prepare for death, most importantly on the spiritual plane of being ready to meet the Lord with our interior house in order, but also on the practical level of health decisions, an updated will, funeral and burial plans, and the dispersal of possessions.

Compassionate services for divorced Catholics and those in irregular marriage situations

MADISON — In an effort to improve diocesan ministry to divorced Catholics and those in irregular marriage situations, the Diocese of Madison Tribunal has expanded its services to include a Pre-Petition Case Advisor.

A Pre-Petition Case Advisor accompanies an individual through the discernment process following a divorce by explaining the Church’s teaching on marriage, making a personal assessment of any moral and canonical remedies available, and providing assistance in petitioning for a declaration of nullity (commonly referred to as an annulment).

‘I think it would be fun to run a newspaper’

kevin-editorial

For those of you out there wanting to know more about the new guy, the above headline of my first official editorial may give you some hint as to my personality and interests — I’m an old movie fan.

In taking this position at the Catholic Herald, there was no way I was going to let an opportunity pass by to quote the line from Citizen Kane — “I think it would be fun to run a newspaper”.

Those that have seen the 1941 classic know the line, and I certainly hope my fate later in life is not isolation in my own “Xanadu”-like castle.

For those of you who haven’t seen the movie yet, you should.

In fall, students will return to Catholic schools

Looking back at my life, other than some great teachers, my time in elementary school wasn’t that memorable. Like anything, it had its moments but as a whole, it was pretty ordinary.
