Former seminary could be transformed into housing community

MADISON — A Madison icon, the former Holy Name Seminary, a neo-colonial revival landmark that welcomed its first students in 1964 and has served as the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Pastoral Center (BOC) since the seminary was closed in 1995, may be transformed into a multi-family housing community, officials at the Diocese of Madison announced September 25.

The diocese signed a letter of intent with Gorman & Company to enter exclusive negotiations for a development contract and 60-year lease agreement to renovate the building as a “certified historic rehabilitation” in compliance with historic preservation guidelines prescribed by the National Park Service.

According to the letter of intent, the Diocese of Madison would retain ownership of the BOC land to be leased, as well as determination over the future use of the approximately 72-acre Bishop O’Connor Center.

The landmark building that would be redeveloped by Gorman would revert to diocesan control at the end of the 60-year lease period. In the interim, the diocese would relocate its administrative offices, and those of Catholic Charities and its family of other tenants, on a mutually convenient date before construction starts.

Pastoral ministers support each other through association

MADISON — Pastoral ministers who are part of a parish staff may have any number and variety of responsibilities.

Many of us coordinate outreach to the homebound, visits to people in care facilities, and ministry to the bereaved.

Others are deacons, liturgists, pastoral musicians, social justice coordinators, directors of communications, or have adult faith formation responsibilities.

BELMONT — Hosted by the Grant Vicariate, the 59th annual meeting of the Madison Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (MDCCW) focused on the theme of “Uniting Women of Faith” and brought together women from throughout the 11-county Madison Diocese to the Belmont Convention Center recently.

MDCCW President Coreen Marklein, Baraboo, presided at the convention. Jeffrey Arrowood, Somerset, founder and director of From the Abbey, gave the keynote on “Take Control of Your Life.” He also led a shareshop on evangelization.

Another shareshop was presented on foster care and resulted in more than 100 backpacks and personal items donated by MDCCW to foster children.

Individual membership approved

Women may now join the MDCCW as individual members whether or not their parish is affiliated with MDCCW as a result of action taken at the convention.

Marklein thanked the members for voting unanimously to change the constitution and by-laws to allow individual membership. Because fewer parishes have councils that provide for membership in MDCCW, the change gives all diocesan women “an opportunity to unite and share our spirituality, leadership, and service with other women of the council in the Madison Diocese.”

As a result of the change, the website for the diocesan council, www.mdccw.com, includes a new brochure and membership form.

Local teens make pilgrimage to Rio

Journey is a poor word to describe our pilgrimage to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for World Youth Day. The better way to describe it would be to call it a quest. A quest in which the forces of light battle the hordes of darkness. However, in this case the darkness is inside of us. This darkness is the thought that we are alone in our fight against evil, that Church is weak, diminishing, powerless against the aggressive advances of the devil in our world.

Religious freedom on the Fourth of July

Dear Friends,
As I write this column, we are coming quickly upon the Fourth of July, when we as a nation celebrate our independence and freedom. It is this freedom which has provided tremendous room for our flourishing as a human race and as a nation, but it is a delicate freedom, built upon the presupposition that we as a nation will choose to exercise our freedom in a way that moves forward toward what is best.

MADISON — Colin Jenkins has been hired as the new full-time Marriage Preparation Coordinator/Pro-Life Coordinator for the Diocese of Madison.

Jenkins will be taking over the majority of marriage preparation activities, and Andy Galvin, marriage and family coordinator for the diocese, will be shifting to marriage enrichment and an expansion of Theology of the Body opportunities in the diocese.

“He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge about marriage and family that will serve the program and the many engaged couples well,” said Galvin. “He will also be a great addition to our team as we look to expand our overall support for marriages and families in the diocese.”
