Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Beloit to hold ‘retooled’ Fall Festival

BELOIT — Change seems to be one word often used when dealing with events during pandemic in 2020.

At Our Lady of the Assumption (OLA) Parish, the annual Fall Festival on Sunday, Sept. 27, was retooled by committee members to conform with safety protocols that have been put into practice on the entire church campus.

A ‘Back to School’ like no other

Another school year is upon us, and so many of our teachers are filled with great joy and excitement at the idea of once again seeing all of the children, students, and families who we haven’t seen since St. Patrick’s Day last March.

In fall, students will return to Catholic schools

Looking back at my life, other than some great teachers, my time in elementary school wasn’t that memorable. Like anything, it had its moments but as a whole, it was pretty ordinary.

St. Ambrose Academy students put faith into action during fall Service Day

MADISON — St. Ambrose Academy students are developing love for Jesus both in the classroom and the chapel throughout the school year.

But, in order to embody the school motto “Christ is Everything for Us,” that love must also spill over into acts of charity toward others, bringing the love that God has for us into our regular habits and actions.

On Friday, Oct. 19, the entire student body put that principle into practice at 15 sites throughout the Diocese of Madison — from Camp Gray in Reedsburg to The Beacon in downtown Madison and Second Harvest on the east side — during the fall semester Service Day.

Who we are and what role we play

This is the first in a two-part series on the five “acts” in the drama of salvation history.

This fall, I am giving presentations to all of the high school teachers, staff, and administrators in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. These talks take place on an annual basis, and they are dedicated to a regular cycle of topics. This year, the theme is morality. Lucky me!

My guess is that disquisitions on doctrine or Church history or pastoral practice wouldn’t raise too many hackles, but ethics is practically guaranteed to rile people up, especially now when issues of same-sex marriage, transgenderism, and assisted suicide are so present to the public consciousness.

Who we are as Christians

I am not sure whether I’m delighting or disappointing my audiences, but I am not ordering my talks to address these hot-button questions. Indeed, it is my conviction that a good deal of mischief and confusion is caused precisely by characterizing Catholic morality primarily as a matrix for adjudicating such matters.

A cinematic lesson in hope

At a moment like this when there doesn’t seem to be a lot going right — ascendant authoritarianisms throughout the world; lethal violence by ideological fanatics; feckless responses to both from the democracies — it’s good to be reminded that things can be different, and in fact were different, not so very long ago.

Recapturing those days and summoning memories of a time when the good folks won, cleanly and against all the odds, is the singular accomplishment of a splendid new documentary, Liberating a Continent: John Paul II and the Fall of Communism, which should be on everyone’s summer must-watch list.
