Tristate Youth Choral Festival concert

SINSINAWA — The Tristate Youth Choral Festival concert will be held on Thursday, April 27, at 7 p.m., at the Sinsinawa Mound.

Students in grades three to eight are offered an opportunity to participate in an afternoon clinic and perform a concert under the direction of guest clinician Karmella Sellers, Dubuque Chorale Children’s Choir director.

Children’s choir joins in Lessons and Carols

MADISON — For more than 25 years, the Madison Diocesan Choir has celebrated the birth of Christ with its Festival of Lessons and Carols, and the worship service on Sunday, Dec. 18, at Holy Name Heights promises to be a celebration like no other.

Unlike earlier concerts featuring a professional brass ensemble, string section, acclaimed vocalists, or soloists on harp or horn, this event offers the angelic voices of youth, featuring the Cardinal Cantors of St. Maria Goretti Catholic School in Madison as special musical guests.

Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols

BARABOO — St. Joseph Parish will present an Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Church, 304 East St. All are invited to take one hour to spend with the Lord.

Participants will pray the ancient O Antiphons, prophetic promises of salvation. These have been sung with the Canticle of Mary since the sixth century. Each antiphon highlights a title for the Messiah taken from the Hebrew Scriptures.

Family is focus at Good Shepherd Festival

MADISON — From preparation to the actual event, the Good Shepherd Parish Family Festival engages family members of all ages.

Well known for the sale of pfeffernuesse cookies, the festival will be held Sunday, Nov. 13, at St. James Church located on St. James Ct. near Mills and Mound Sts.

The festival begins with a Children’s Mass at 8:30, followed by the opening of the trash and treasure sale in the school basement as well as the bakery, snack bar, silent auction and raffles, pfefferenuesse sale, and children’s games in the school gym. The chicken dinner starts at 11 a.m. and goes until 4:30 p.m.

Monona parish holds family-friendly race

MONONA — Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) Parish will hold the Support Our Athletic Race (S.O.A.R.) on Sunday, May 29, starting at 3:30 p.m. at IHM School, 4913 Schofield St.

The family-friendly 5K and one-mile courses run through the residential streets of Monona. All are invited to attend and participate in this community event.

Nearly 200 runners, joggers, and walkers participated in last year’s events. All participants under the age of 13 receive a medal.

MADISON — The Madison Diocesan Choir gives a special gift to the Diocese of Madison each year during the holiday season.

The choir presented its annual Festival of Lessons and Carols on Sunday, Dec. 20, in the chapel of the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Center.

Bishop Robert C. Morlino presided at the service, which includes Scripture readings and hymns and songs celebrating the season.

Dr. Patrick Gorman directed the 66-voice choir composed of singers from throughout the diocese.

Enhancing Lessons and Carols this year was the stirring music provided by the St. Raphael Brass Quintet and timpani. Members of the quintet include Robert Rohlfing and Jessica Jensen, trumpet; Matthew Beecher, horn; Brian Whitty, trombone; and David Spies, tuba. Joe Bernstein performed on the timpani.

Glenn Schuster, assistant director of the choir, provided piano accompaniment.

Monroe Clinic hosts Christmas Festival

MONROE — Monroe Clinic Volunteers in Partnership (MCVIP) will host their annual Christmas Festival on Friday, Dec. 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Monroe Clinic Founder’s Hall, in the lower level at 515 22nd Ave.

This year, MCVIP has created many beautiful gift baskets that are wonderful for Christmas giving. The annual tradition features a catered lunch by Barb’s Kitchen, coffee, fresh pastries made by Boomerang Bakery, Prairie Stone gift items, a 50/50 raffle, and a silent auction.

Rolling cookies for pfefferneusse sale at St. James Church

MADISON — Last November, all of the nearly 3,000 bags of pfefferneusse were sold out by mid-morning at the Good Shepherd Parish family festival at St. James Church, located off of Regent St.

Disappointed prospective buyers were told they could guarantee getting pfefferneusse next year if they helped make the traditional German cookie. Rolling cookies is done Monday and Wednesday evenings and Tuesday afternoons from August through October in the St. James Church basement, and all are welcome to help.

Hispanic families plan festival on May 2

MONONA — On Saturday, May 2, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., parents and friends of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) Catholic School Advantage (CSA) program will be hosting the third annual Hispanic Heritage Festival at 4913 Schofield St.

CSA parents invite all those in the community to support the children and their families by attending the festival. The Hispanic Heritage Festival is the primary fundraiser that supports the CSA program and the scholarships necessary to meet the needs of an increasing population of Hispanic families in the area who desire a Catholic school education for their children.
