Good Friday Tenebrae service in Baraboo

BARABOO — St. Joseph Parish, Baraboo, will again celebrate the beautiful and peaceful Tenebrae service on Good Friday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. Tenebrae, which means “shadows” in Latin, dates to the ancient Church.

The service incorporates light, music, Scripture, and prayer to focus on Jesus’ passion: his betrayal, abandonment, and agony. The Passion narrative is told in readings, followed by Scripture and a musical reflection.

Bishop grants dispensation from abstinence on St. Patrick’s Day

MADISON — The bishops of Wisconsin determined together that since St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Friday this year (March 17), it would be appropriate to dispense the faithful from the obligation of abstinence from eating meat that day.

Since this must be done by each bishop in his own diocese, Bishop Robert C. Morlino has issued a “Rescript Granting Dispensation” for the “faithful who reside in the Diocese of Madison, as well as anyone actually present in the Diocese of Madison” on March 17, 2017.

Good Friday Walk for Justice and Mercy to be held in Madison

MADISON — What do walking for justice and mercy have to do with the three foci of Lent: fasting, prayer, and charity? Everything!

During the Church’s Jubilee Year of Mercy and the coming Good Friday time of meditating on the suffering and death of Jesus, Madisonians are invited to walk together to 10 stations in downtown Madison that will call to mind the need for justice and mercy in the world.

On Friday, March 25, all will gather at 4:30 p.m. at Cathedral Place, near the corner of West Washington Ave. and S. Henry St., to commence a one-hour, one-mile loop walk to 10 locations, including the Dane County Jail and the State Capitol.

A Good Friday prayer for our suffering world

By prayerfully meditating before a crucifix, one can see and begin to understand, the ultimate result of sin.

The Romans’ sins, the Jews’ sins, our sins nailed our Lord Jesus to the cross. The cost of sin is death. Our sins killed the Son of God. Our sins crucified our loving Lord. And our sins continue his suffering passion.
