Jefferson Catholic school goes green

JEFFERSON — The fourth grade class at St. John the Baptist School (SJB) in Jefferson has spearheaded a campaign to promote environmental awareness.

The fourth graders, who have been collecting classroom trash each day for the last few years, were upset by the amount of garbage in classroom trash cans each day. They also observed the large number of items that should have been recycled instead of tossed into the trash.

The students decided to take action.

John Henry Newman at the synod

Controversies surrounding the recent Extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the Family have put me in mind of Blessed John Henry Newman, the greatest Catholic churchman of the 19th century.

Newman wrote eloquently on many topics, but the arguments around the synod compel us to look at his work regarding the evolution of doctrine.

The development of doctrine

When he was at mid-career and in the process of converting from Anglicanism to Roman Catholicism, Newman penned a masterpiece entitled On the Development of Christian Doctrine.

Dressing for success — and modesty

For parents and students everywhere, “back to school” means shopping and lots of it, mostly for supplies and clothes. In both of those areas, there can be debates and battles between parents and children on what each thinks the student should have.

With fashions and trends always changing, buying “school clothes” becomes a yearly challenge.

Schools in the Diocese of Madison try every year to create a safe and comfortable learning environment while dealing with new fashion trends.

Peace project at St. John the Baptist School in Jefferson

JEFFERSON — “Let Peace Begin With Me” is a song with a powerful message of personal responsibility in planting and nurturing the seeds of peace in one’s own world.

The fifth and sixth grade classes at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Jefferson, under the guidance of school counselor, Mrs. Joanna Becker, embraced the idea of working towards world peace by bringing it closer to home.

Sadako’s story

Mrs. Becker introduced the “Peace Project” by sharing the true story of a young Japanese girl, Sadako Sasaki, who was an innocent victim of war as she suffered the effects of deadly radiation after the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in 1945. She was only two years old on the day of the bombing and died 10 years later as a result of leukemia.
