Theo-dramas of SS. Patrick and Joseph

I am always pleased when the feasts of St. Patrick and St. Joseph roll around every year, the first on March 17 and the second on March 19. Joseph is especially dear to the Italian people, who celebrate him with festive meals, and Patrick, of course, is specially reverenced by my own people, the Irish, who celebrate him with parades, parties, and (often) too much drinking.

Though separated by four centuries and though hailing from extremely different cultures, Patrick and Joseph have a great deal in common, spiritually speaking. For both stubbornly situated their lives in the context, not of the ego-drama, but the theo-drama, and therein lies their importance for the universal church.

Bishop Morlino celebrates Pontifical Mass at the Throne

MADISON — On Monday, March 20, at the chapel of Holy Name Heights (Bishop O’Connor Center), His Excellency Robert C. Morlino, Bishop of Madison, celebrated a Pontifical Mass at the Throne for the transferred Feast of St. Joseph.

The Mass was in the Roman Rite’s older, traditional form, sometimes called the “Extraordinary Form.” The music was in Latin, in Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony, with two hymns in English for the entrance and the recessional.

Bishop to celebrate Pontifical Mass at the Throne

MADISON — On Monday, March 20, at 7 p.m., His Excellency Most Reverend Robert C. Morlino will celebrate a Pontifical Mass at the Throne (Extraordinary Form) in the chapel of the Holy Name Heights in Madison (Bishop O’Connor Center), 702 S. High Point Rd.

Holy Mass will be celebrated in honor of the Feast of St. Joseph, foster father of the Lord, husband of Mary, patron of the Church, of the dying, of fathers, and of immigrants.

The music will be Gregorian Chant and polyphonic motets.

Valentine social in Fort Atkinson

FORT ATKINSON — St. Joe’s 55-PLUS Group will have their annual Valentine potluck social on Friday, Feb. 10, at St. Joseph Parish Hall at 1 p.m.

Baked salmon with hoisin sauce, steamed asparagus, coffee, lemonade, and tableware will be provided. Those attending are asked to bring a dish to pass.

Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols

BARABOO — St. Joseph Parish will present an Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Church, 304 East St. All are invited to take one hour to spend with the Lord.

Participants will pray the ancient O Antiphons, prophetic promises of salvation. These have been sung with the Canticle of Mary since the sixth century. Each antiphon highlights a title for the Messiah taken from the Hebrew Scriptures.

Gala for the Glen set for June 18

BARABOO — Durward’s Glen Retreat and Educational Center will hold its 2016 Gala for the Glen on Saturday, June 18, at St. Joseph School in Baraboo. Dinner tickets are $50 each.

The Gala for the Glen is one of the major fundraisers for Durward’s Glen. The Friends Group that purchased the property in 2011 to preserve these 37+ acres of natural and historic beauty, has been working steadily to make improvements to the grounds and expand the programs offered for Catholic faith development and renewal, cultural arts, and environmental stewardship.
