Corpus Christi Mass and procession to be held in Madison

MADISON — The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of the Lord, or Corpus Christi, celebrates the Eucharist in more focused way than Holy Thursday. It is traditionally celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, although in many places it is transferred to Sunday.

In 1246, Robert of Thourotte, Bishop of Liège in Belgium, had instituted a feast for the Eucharist at the request of an Augustinian nun and mystic, St. Juliana of Cornillon. Corpus Christi was established for the whole Church by Pope Urban IV in 1264. Its Mass and Office were composed by St. Thomas Aquinas (+1274).

Rorate Mass: an Advent tradition

PINE BLUFF — “I should get up when and drive where for what? For Mass?!? But it’s a Saturday!”

Mass begins in the darkness before dawn. Remember, Advent is a penitential season after all.

Bishop Morlino to celebrate Pontifical Mass at the Throne

MADISON — On the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Monday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m., Bishop Robert C. Morlino will celebrate a Pontifical Mass at the Throne at the Bishop O’Connor Pastoral Center, 702 S. High Point Rd., in Madison.

The Feast, or Solemnity, of the Immaculate Conception, which this year falls on a Monday, is a holy day of obligation in the United States because Mary, under the title of Immaculate Conception, is patroness of the nation.

Pontifical Requiem Mass for deceased bishops and priests on November 3

MADISON — In the “Church Year,” November is a significant month for considering the Communion of the Saints and the holy souls in Purgatory.

At the start of the month, the Church celebrates All Saints Day, giving thanks to God for all those we believe have achieved their heavenly goal, and then All Souls Day, during which we pray for the souls of all those who have departed but await their entry into heaven. They are moving days, which call to mind not only loved ones and friends who have died, but also the end of our own lives.

Focusing on the plight of immigrants during Lent

“Forty days in the desert” describes Jesus at the start of his ministry and the Christian community during Lent.

For me, henceforth, it will also bring to mind migrants who make a dangerous journey through Mexico to the United States. I learned on a tour with the organization Witness for Peace that the trip for those who start in southern Mexico or Central America can take one to two months and often includes walking through treacherous stretches of desert.

Change is not such a bad thing

grand mom

Aging is all about changes. Some changes are in-evitable. Some are good. And some are plain difficult.

Changing seasons is welcome. On the Sunday after Thanksgiving, I stood sorting through my closet before dressing for church. The time for rusts and golds was past and it was too soon for Christmas colors. I picked purple.

An hour later as I walked into church, our sacristan grabbed my arm. “You remember that you’re a lector today, right?” I hadn’t, of course.
