Devotion to Mary continues

When I was growing up in La Crosse, I used to attend Our Mother of Perpetual Help novenas every Tuesday evening with my family at Blessed Sacrament Parish.

I liked attending the novenas, but I never learned much about this Marian devotion. It wasn’t until recently that I found out how it developed.

I discovered that the icon of the Blessed Mother with her divine son (pictured here) has helped provide strength, comfort, and even miracles to the faithful for centuries.

It seems appropriate during May — the month dedicated to Mary — that we learn more about Our Mother of Perpetual Help.

Monona parish holds family-friendly race

MONONA — Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) Parish will hold the Support Our Athletic Race (S.O.A.R.) on Sunday, May 29, starting at 3:30 p.m. at IHM School, 4913 Schofield St.

The family-friendly 5K and one-mile courses run through the residential streets of Monona. All are invited to attend and participate in this community event.

Nearly 200 runners, joggers, and walkers participated in last year’s events. All participants under the age of 13 receive a medal.

LANCASTER — Sunday, May 1.

The first day of the month dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

May 1 was a chance for one Catholic community in the Diocese of Madison to honor the Blessed Mother, give thanks for her intercession, and pray for the year ahead.

The prayers to Jesus through Mary started that day at St. Clement Church in Lancaster, the county seat of Grant County in southwestern Wisconsin.

Enrollment in the Brown Scapular

The first special event of the day began at the 9 a.m. Mass. Following his homily, Pastor Fr. John Sasse enrolled the recent parish second grade First Communicants into the Brown Scapular.

In what was a display of family faith togetherness, parents of First Communicants were also enrolled into the scapular at the same time.

The Brown Scapular is worn as a sign of devotion to the Blessed Mother.

A promise made by Mary is that those who wear the scapular when they die will not suffer the pains of hell.

Bloomington school exchanges teachers with Chinese school

BLOOMINGTON — People might forget many things about you, but they rarely forget how you make them feel.

St. Mary School in Bloomington — located in Grant County in the Diocese of Madison — has completed our first teaching exchange with Shijiazhuang No. 40 Middle School in China.

Exchange program

St. Mary’s teacher Miss Margie Duwe spent four weeks in China teaching science to almost 1,000 students a week, and Mr. Mark Ma, Mr. Peter Cao, and Miss Susan Wang taught science and reading at St. Mary’s.

The experience has had a profound effect on both teachers and students, who embraced culture beyond the classrooms.

Since 2012, St. Mary’s and Shijiazhuang No. 40 Middle School have been strengthened by an exchange program in which students and teachers live with host families.

In this month of mothers

On May 8 we celebrate Mother’s Day, and as Catholics we dedicate the whole month to our heavenly mother, Mary.

And so, May is a natural time to reflect on the irreplaceable role of mothers and all women in our lives.

Prophetic words

In the weeks following our appearance at the Supreme Court, several women who write about Catholic spirituality mentioned prophetic words of Blessed Paul VI to women in reference to our case — words uttered over 50 years ago, but which are, perhaps, more relevant today than ever.

“At this moment when the human race is undergoing so deep a transformation, women impregnated with the spirit of the Gospel can do so much to aid mankind in not falling,” Paul VI said at the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council.

He continued with this urgent plea: “Women of the entire universe, whether Christian or non-believing, you to whom life is entrusted at this grave moment in history, it is for you to save the peace of the world.”
