We need to spend more time with God

To the editor:

There were many good insights in the article by Bishop Robert Barron (on a Pew Study about why young people are leaving the active practice of Christianity) which we can easily recognize.

What is often left out for consideration in discussion of this issue is that in the modern faith formation process, at least in my limited experience of 50 years, there is a lack of engagement of many people, including myself, to a life devoted to dynamic personal devotional intercession and communal intercession happening outside the confines of a very structured and impersonal speedy approach by some to the celebration of the Mass and community involvement within the parish outside of Mass.

Watching for the Risen Lord together

Dear Friends,

As autumn approaches as well as the start of the new school year, I hope and pray that the summer has been good to you, each in accord with your needs and the Lord’s Providence.

The summer (though too short, of course) has finished with a great flourish of late, as I’ve been able to bless or consecrate a number of new altars around the diocese.

Parish renovations

In the first place, a few parishes have recently completed renovation projects — some minor but beautiful, some more involved — in order to enhance their sanctuaries and especially to have a fitting place for the tabernacle in the middle of the sanctuary.

Thank you to all the pastors and people who have worked hard on these projects to date. (And thanks to all those who are working on projects for the future.)

In addition, two weeks ago I blessed the lovely chapel built into the tremendous new development at the Catholic Charities’ All Saints Community. It is a fitting centerpiece for that growing retirement community and assisted living facility. Jackson Fonder and his team, along with the All Saints Board, should be proud.

Reflections on the life, work, and canonization of St. Teresa

Lindsay Becher

“God thirsts that we may thirst for him.” — Catechism of the Catholic Church no. 2560

I thirst.

These words spoken from Jesus on the cross were also imprinted on the heart of St. Teresa of Kolkata (Mother Teresa) on September 10, 1946, and every day forward.

These words, and what Jesus revealed to her about them on a train ride that “Inspiration Day,” changed her life. Through the Church’s newest saint, they have also changed mine.

Apostolate to the Handicapped presents annual Day at the Dells

“This is really a miracle,” said Norberta Lewis from Necedah.

The first-time guest of the Diocese of Madison’s Apostolate to the Handicapped Day at the Dells was amazed and impressed that a priest would bring Communion to her seat, a volunteer would bring her sack lunch, and she, and her friend Margaret Gabay, also from Necedah, would get a chance to see a performance of the Tommy Bartlett Water Show.

Office of Worship offers workshops on Mass Propers

MADISON — At the Presbyteral Assembly in 2015, Bishop Robert C. Morlino made a request that pastors use the Mass Propers, specifically the Entrance and Communion antiphons, more frequently.

In response to that request, the diocesan Office of Worship is offering a two-hour workshop called “Understanding Mass Propers.” Priests, deacons, liturgists, musicians, and others involved in music and liturgy are encouraged to attend.
