Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is holy day of obligation

MADISON — This year the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Second Sunday of Advent fall on successive days: Saturday, Dec. 8, and Sunday, Dec. 9.

Since the solemnity remains a holy day of obligation, there is sometimes confusion regarding when and how often people need to participate in Mass. There are several scenarios that could take place that weekend. The Diocesan Office of Worship suggests the following:

Bishop Morlino to celebrate annual Requiem Mass November 2

MADISON — Bishop Robert C. Morlino will celebrate the annual Requiem Mass on All Souls Day, Friday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. in the Bishop O’Donnell Chapel at Holy Name Heights, 702 S. High Point Rd.

November is the month when Catholics pray in a special way for the repose of the dead and, by God’s will, for the rapid entrance into heaven of the Poor Souls.

Bishop Morlino, with the help of many clerical and lay ministers, will celebrate the Solemn Pontifical Requiem Mass for the intention of all the deceased priests and bishops of the Diocese of Madison.

Diocesan Choir to sing in Baraboo

BARABOO — The Madison Diocesan Choir will join with the St. Joseph Choir to provide the music ministry for Mass on Saturday evening, Oct. 27, at 4 p.m. The church is located at 300 2nd St. in Baraboo. All are invited.

The Diocesan Choir has more than 60 singers this year. The choir sings at parishes around the diocese and at many diocesan Masses (such as Chrism Mass and ordinations).

BENTON — The annual Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli Memorial Mass and dinner will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, at St. Patrick Church, Benton.

The public is invited to attend the day’s events sponsored by the Father Mazzuchelli Assembly 1202 Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Lancaster.

Dominican Rite Mass at Blessed Sacrament on July 29

MADISON — On Sunday, July 29, at 3 p.m., massgoers at Blessed Sacrament Church in Madison will not only fulfill their Sunday obligation to attend Mass, they will also experience some of the rich history and liturgical tradition of the parish and the Dominican Order.

The Mass will be a Traditional Latin Mass in what is called the “Dominican Rite”.

It will be celebrated by Fr. James Dominic Rooney, OP, who is in residence at the parish this summer while working on his doctorate from Saint Louis University.

Children’s laughter fills the air as dusk creeps gently over our backyard. Firelight flickers in the firepit, embers smoldering, perfect for roasting marshmallows.

Soft night sounds and fireflies spring up from the grass around us, and a cool breeze bathes our foreheads.

Truly this is a glimpse of heaven, I think, as I breathe out a deep sigh of contentment and thank God for the moment. What could be better than this?

Memorial Day Masses will be held in the Diocese of Madison. Besides the Masses indicated here, check with local parishes for Masses being celebrated on Monday, May 28.

Please note: Because of the heat, the Memorial Day Mass will be held in the chapel at Holy Name Heights, 702 S. High Point Rd., Madison, at 10 a.m., not at Resurrection Cemetery.

In Madison, because of the heat, the Memorial Day Mass will be held at the chapel at Holy Name Heights at 10 a.m., and not at Resurrection Cemetery.  Bishop Robert C. Morlino will be the principal celebrant and homilist. Area priests will serve as concelebrants. Knights of Columbus will serve as an honor guard. In case of rain, Mass will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 405 S. Owen Dr. Refreshments will follow Mass.
