Diocesan youth make pilgrimage to Poland

In the first week of August, Pope Francis will meet hundreds of thousands of young people, including nearly 140 from Madison, in Krakow, Poland, to teach the young about the mercy of Christ in this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy.

This year’s World Youth Day theme is: “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Mt 5:7).

The youth of Madison are travelling in primarily two groups: one from St. Paul University Catholic Center in Madison, led by Fr. Eric Nielsen, and the other led by Fr. Brian Dulli.

Faculty lecture open to public

MADISON — “Not One Iota! Why We Say ‘Consubstantial’ in the Creed” is the topic of a St. Ambrose Faculty Lecture to be presented at the Cathedral Parish (St. Patrick Church) on Thursday, Sept. 11, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. by Dr. Constance Nielsen.

Nielsen has taught extensively on the ecumenical councils in Church history in her religion classes at St. Ambrose Academy in Madison, where she is the director of classical education. She received a doctorate in religious studies from Marquette University.

Seat of Wisdom courses for the Year of Faith

MADISON — Inspired in this Year of Faith by Pope Francis’ emphasis on charity and social justice, the diocesan Office of Evangelization and Catechesis is sponsoring two new courses on Catholic Social Doctrine, both being taught by Dr. Constance Nielsen.

The six-hour introduction course is being offered in regional parishes and available for local programming at the request of parishes or schools.

The more expanded course is being offered at the Bishop O’Connor Center one Saturday per month throughout the academic year. Remaining dates include November 23, January 25, February 22, March 22, April 26, and May 17.

MADISON — Since the turn of the 20th century, the Catholic student organization at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has been there to provide outreach to college students seeking more than the academic formation offered by the secular institute.
