Election will decide future

To the editor:

The election of 2012 will decide what kind of future our children and grandchildren will have: one based on Christian moral principles or one based on the wholesale discarding of them. The Obama Administration champions no limit on abortions up to nine months of gestation, gay marriage, and limitations on our religious freedom.

Article found ambiguous

To the editor:

We find the “Forming Consciences” article (Catholic Herald, September 27, 2012) to be both ambiguous and confusing. Stating that Catholics are to vote using a well-formed conscience is correct; however, our consciences have not been well-formed for the past 40 years or so. This close to the election it is essential that we speak plainly and clearly about what is at stake and disregard “nice platitudes and political correctness.”

Certain issues trump all other issues. The most significant issues trumping all others have to do with religious freedom, abortion, same-sex marriage, contraception, and other “culture of death” issues.

Subsidiarity, solidarity, and the lay mission

This column is the bishop’s communication with the faithful of the Diocese of Madison. Any wider circulation reaches beyond the intention of the bishop.

Dear friends,

It was no shock at all for me to learn that our diocesan native son, Paul Ryan, had been chosen to be a candidate for the Vice Presidency of the United States. I am proud of his accomplishments as a native son, and a brother in the faith, and my prayers go with him and especially with his family as they endure the unbelievable demands of a presidential campaign here in the United States. It is not for the bishop or priests to endorse particular candidates or political parties. Any efforts on the part of any bishop or priest to do so should be set aside. And you can be assured that no priest who promotes a partisan agenda is acting in union with me or with the Universal Church.

It is the role of bishops and priests to teach principles of our faith, such that those who seek elected offices, if they are Catholics, are to form their consciences according to these principles about particular policy issues.

For Greater Glory movie recommended viewing

For Greater Glory (opening Friday, June 1) is a timely historical film about the fight for religious freedom.

Set in the increasingly-secular, increasingly-socialist, and increasingly-power-hungry political atmosphere of 1920s Mexico, For Greater Glory tells the true story of anti-Catholic and anti-clerical oppression by the Mexican Government, led by President Plutarco Elías Calles.

Religious freedom, freedom of conscience

Dear Friends,
Last week I was privileged to be a witness to religious freedom and freedom of conscience with nearly 500 faithful people at the Federal building in downtown Madison. Such rallies had been quickly organized around our nation and I know that not all who might have come were able (or even aware of the events).

Appreciates information on administration’s mandate attacking religious freedom

To the editor:

Thank you for taking the lead in bringing awareness to our Catholic laity regarding the recent Obama abomination in his mandate regarding a ruling that all Catholic entities would be mandated to provide contraceptive and sterilization services that are in direct opposition to the beliefs of our Catholic faith.

What an unbelievable attack on religious freedom as provided for in our Constitution. Our fore fathers are turning over in their graves at this attack.

Let us pray for preservation of gift of religious freedom

To the editor:

Thank you for the December 29 editorial on Faith and Public Life and for coverage the last few months of the recent efforts by U.S. bishops in ongoing defense of religious freedom.

Let us love one another as Jesus loves us, especially by praying in secret and by meditating on Jesus and the Father and their teachings as Mary, Handmaid of the Father and Queen assumed into heaven, meditates.

Take action to support conscience rights

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

A new federal mandate on health care coverage is posing a threat to the religious freedom of  Church-affiliated employers, including Catholic hospitals, universities, and charitable institutions.

Health insurance plans are being required to provide reproductive services for women including contraceptives and sterilization procedures, as well as for drugs that may cause an abortion both before and after implantation.

Protect the right of conscience: State of Wisconsin should change new insurance law

Editorial logo

In August of 2009, the Catholic bishops of all five dioceses in Wisconsin wrote a letter sharing their “deep concern” about a provision in the new state budget that would require providers of health insurance to include contraceptive services as a “mandated benefit.”

The bishops were concerned because this mandate would “compel Catholic dioceses, parishes, and other agencies that buy health insurance to pay for a medical service that Catholic teaching holds to be gravely immoral.”
