Let us pray for preservation of gift of religious freedom

On February 1, 2012
Mark John Francis Scott

To the editor:

Thank you for the December 29 editorial on Faith and Public Life and for coverage the last few months of the recent efforts by U.S. bishops in ongoing defense of religious freedom.

Let us love one another as Jesus loves us, especially by praying in secret and by meditating on Jesus and the Father and their teachings as Mary, Handmaid of the Father and Queen assumed into heaven, meditates.

Let us pray for the Holy Spirit to draw all people’s souls of all nations to occupy the whole Church in love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and in love and honor of Mary, Handmaid of the Father and Mother of the Son; to draw people’s souls to reject Satan and receive Baptism by water and the Spirit; and to persevere in prayer and devotion to the gifts of the sacraments.

Let us pray in our homes and together in our churches for the preservation of God’s gift of religious freedom from government coercion, to love one another as Jesus loves us.

Let us pray, not only about the meaning of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, but also about the meaning of Article 1, Section 18 of the Wisconsin Constitution. Does liberty of conscience also mean that no public funds shall support atheism or other secular ideologies or beliefs?

May the Holy Spirit guide our hearts and minds to love as Jesus loves us.

Mark John Francis Scott, Madison
