Importance of prayer in times of trouble

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

We have certainly been overwhelmed by all the disasters happening these days, from hurricanes to earthquakes to violence and discord in the world.

We may be tempted to throw in the towel, so to speak. We wonder if there is anything we can do in the face of all the turmoil.

Of course, we should respond with any kind of assistance possible. We can donate money to Catholic Charities USA and other outreach efforts. But is there anything else that we can do?

The power of prayer

I found an interesting commentary by the late Norman Vincent Peale, a minister in the Reformed Church in America, who was well known for espousing the power of positive thinking. The headline for his commentary is: “How to Pray in Times of Trouble: You can pray your way through any difficulty.”

Our Lady has shown us what to do to save ourselves

To the editor:

Thank you for your pictorial report on the Fatima rallies attended on Saturday, May 13, in some diocesan parishes. Thank you to all the parishioners who attended these rallies.

How is it that we can spend money, large parts of our days on sports events, TV, and electronic devices, but only 50 or fewer individuals could find an hour or less to honor Our Lady on the 100th anniversary of her first apparition at Fatima?

Rosary Rallies for Religious Liberty at Christ the King Parish, McFarland

MCFARLAND — Religious liberty in America continues to be under attack. What is the Catholic response to hostilities, political agendas, and perhaps unjust laws?

The most important response is to pray, support one another, and reflect on how to bring love and peace to often-difficult and emotional situations.

For the sixth year, Christ the King Parish in McFarland will be holding weekly Rosary Rallies for Religious Liberty. At the kick-off on Tuesday, June 20, Fr. Steve Smith, pastor of Christ the King Parish, will briefly present how the Catholic tradition can promote the common good in a way that respects all people.

Honoring our earthly and spiritual mothers

Everyday Faith column by Julianne Nornberg

Whether you are one, have one, or are married to one, mothers affect every person in the world.

My eight siblings and I have been blessed with a very gentle mother who simply and genuinely reflects many of the same characteristics of Our Blessed Mother.

Lasting memories

My earliest memory of my mom was when I was “helping” her bake a cake by moving the small plastic containers of decorative sprinkles from one side of the kitchen to the other.

Honoring Mary during May has special significance this year

For many centuries, Catholics have devoted the month of May to Mary. Both in our churches and in our homes, we offer special prayers to Our Lady and honor her as our spiritual mother.

This year, this month takes on special significance. On May 13, we will mark the 100th anniversary of the appearance of Our Lady to three shepherd children in 1917 in Fatima, Portugal.

Rosary Rally for traditional marriage to be held in Green Lake

GREEN LAKE — Join with others to pray the Rosary for traditional marriage on Saturday, March 18, at 12 noon at Deacon Mills Park sidewalk in Green Lake. Prayer handouts and Rosaries will be available.

Marriage in the eyes of God is between a man and a woman. This traditional idea of marriage and family needs attention and serious prayer.

St. Louis de Montfort stated in The Secret of the Rosary that, “Public prayer is far more powerful than private prayer to appease the anger of God and call down His mercy, and Holy Mother Church, guided by the Holy Ghost, has always advocated public prayer in times of public tragedy and suffering.”
