Happy Hearts Harvest Hoedown at Middleton parish

MIDDLETON — St. Bernard Parish Health Commission is sponsoring a Happy Hearts Harvest Hoedown on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the St. Bernard Parish Center, 2015 Parmenter St.

Caller Tom Nickel will teach basic American folk dancing and line dancing.

Profits will be given to St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP). Everyone is invited to join the fun.

Presentation on Laudato Si’ in Madison

MADISON — Care of Creation has scheduled a presentation on Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home on Thursday, Oct. 1, 7 p.m. at the St. Dennis Parish Center, 505 Dempsey Rd.

John Huebscher, executive director of the Wisconsin Catholic Conference will be the presenter. Fr. Randy Timmerman, pastor, and Steve Coleman, resident expert on climate change, will also attend.

Teens join together to serve others

MADISON — “This is a place where you’ll make a difference.”

Those are bold words coming from Edgewood High School junior DC Morris, but they are true.

Morris, along with 21 other teens, makes up the St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) Youth Service Council.

Nearly two years ago, the society’s District Council of Madison formed the council consisting of high school students who serve as representatives for their home parishes or schools.

Annual picnic held at historic church in Waterloo

WATERLOO — The Island Church Foundation invites the public to visit the historic St. Wenceslaus Church, commonly referred to as the Island Church, for the annual St. Wenceslaus Day celebration on Sunday, Sept. 27.

The celebration will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include Mass in the church at 2:30 p.m. Local historian Edward Langer will be on hand with books, maps, and other information from his research on the emigration from Landskron to Waterloo and other places in Wisconsin.

Local Church musicians showcase original compositions

MADISON — On Friday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m., church musicians from Madison and the surrounding area will showcase their own compositions in a public recital at St. James Catholic Church, 1204 St. James Ct., Madison.

Local homegrown musical craft will include works for organ, choir, and other instruments. The Wadsworth pipe organ at St. James will be featured. All music presented will be available at the event in a volume published by the Association of Church Musicians, sponsor of the program.

Ladies of Divine Mercy second year to kickoff

PINE BLUFF — The second year of the Ladies of Divine Mercy will kick off on Friday, Sept. 18, with speaker Fr. Christopher Gernetzke, newly ordained priest of the diocese.

Ladies of Divine Mercy, modeled after the popular Knights of Divine Mercy, is a prayer apostolate which meets the third Friday of each month, September through April, at St. Mary of Pine Bluff Church, 3673 Co. Hwy. P, Cross Plains. The events are open to all women. Nursing mothers are welcome to bring their nurslings. The January and April events will be combined events with the Knights of Divine Mercy.

Why Serra matters today

The upcoming canonization of Blessed Junípero Serra in Washington, D.C. — the first ever to take place on American soil — has generated, as I’m sure you know, a good deal of controversy.

MADISON — When the Red Mass is mentioned, people often express some curiosity about it and wonder what it is, where it originated, and why it is called “red.”

The last question is the easiest to answer. It is because the celebrant of the Mass wears red vestments and long ago, some of the royal judges also had red vestments.

What is a Red Mass?

But what is a Red Mass? It is a Mass, usually celebrated as the new judicial term begins, to ask the Holy Spirit for guidance for all those engaged in the justice and legal systems.
