St. Joe’s 55-PLUS Group presents James Athas in concert

FORT ATKINSON — St. Joe’s 55-PLUS Group will present James Athas in concert on Thursday, April 21, at St. Joseph Parish Hall when the group gathers for its semi-monthly potluck social.

In this concert, Athas will perform on the piano/hammered dulcimer, showcasing his varied talents.

The potluck luncheon begins at 1 p.m. with the Athas Concert scheduled at 1:45 p.m.

What makes the Church grow?

Just recently on the website maintained by the episcopal conference of Germany, there appeared an editorial concerning Pope Francis’ apostolic visit to Africa.

As many have pointed out, the piece was breathtaking in its arrogance and cultural condescension. The author’s take on the surprisingly rapid pace of Christianity’s growth on the “dark continent” (his words)? Well, the level of education in Africa is so low that the people accept easy answers to complex questions.

His assessment of the explosion in vocations across Africa? Well, the poor things don’t have many other avenues of social advancement; so they naturally gravitate toward the priesthood.

A prophetic pope and social teaching

In the wake of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’ and the pope’s recent speeches in Latin America, many supporters of the capitalist economy in the West might be forgiven for thinking that His Holiness has something against them.

Again and again, Pope Francis excoriates an economy based on materialism and greed, and with prophetic urgency, he speaks out against a new colonialism that exploits the labor of those in poorer countries.

In a speech in Bolivia, a country under the command of a socialist president, the pope seemed, almost in a Marxist vein, to be calling on the poor to seize power from the wealthy and take command of their own lives. What do we make of this?

Knights and Ladies of Divine Mercy hold evening of reflection

PINE BLUFF — The Knights and Ladies of Divine Mercy will host an evening of reflection with Bishop Robert C. Morlino followed by a wine and cheese social on Friday, April 10, at St. Mary of Pine Bluff Church.

The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with the “Regina Caeli” and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament followed by an hour of Eucharistic Adoration. The Sacrament of Confession will be available most of the evening. After a sung recitation of the “Chaplet of Divine Mercy” and Evening Prayer, Bishop Morlino will speak on Divine Mercy. Benediction will follow.

St. Paul’s celebrates Masses for Facebook followers

MADISON — On Monday, July 21, the St. Paul University Catholic Center Facebook page was sitting with a strong following of 900 followers.

After the page’s administrator had a short conversation with Fr. Mark Miller — the recently arrived new director of student ministries at St. Paul’s — the following was posted on the page:

“If we reach 1,000 Facebook page ‘likes’ by the end of the week, Fr. Mark will say a Mass for just our Facebook followers:) Please click on our page and on the left hand side, click to invite your friends to like our page!”

Parish offers creation care class

MADISON — Blessed Sacrament Parish will host the Just Faith Ministries’ module, “God’s Creation Cries for Justice,” which probes a faithful response to climate change.

In this eight-week class, participants will examine climate change through the lens of Catholic social teaching — reflecting on their place in and responsibility for God’s creation. With a particular focus on the impact of climate change on the poor and vulnerable, the group will explore what action steps they can take to insure a sustainable future for all.

Trivia Night to raise funds for solar panels

MADISON — All are invited to attend a fun and brain-stimulating night of mental Olympics at Trivia Night II to be held at the St. Thomas Aquinas social hall, 602 Everglade Dr., on Saturday, March 29, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Cost is $20 per person. Either bring your own team (up to 10 people) or you will be will paired up the night of the event.

Liturgy and social doctrine courses offered

MADISON — The Diocese of Madison is offering two series of courses on both the liturgical year and the Social Doctrine of the Church in the coming months.

Study of liturgical year

A comprehensive study on the liturgical year is being offered by Abbot Marcel Rooney through the Seat of Wisdom Diocesan Institute.

Remaining sessions are open to everyone and will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Pastoral Center, 702 S. High Point Rd., on the following Saturday mornings.

Seat of Wisdom courses for the Year of Faith

MADISON — Inspired in this Year of Faith by Pope Francis’ emphasis on charity and social justice, the diocesan Office of Evangelization and Catechesis is sponsoring two new courses on Catholic Social Doctrine, both being taught by Dr. Constance Nielsen.

The six-hour introduction course is being offered in regional parishes and available for local programming at the request of parishes or schools.

The more expanded course is being offered at the Bishop O’Connor Center one Saturday per month throughout the academic year. Remaining dates include November 23, January 25, February 22, March 22, April 26, and May 17.
