Events at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish

MADISON — St. Thomas Aquinas parish has two upcoming events open to all interested persons.

• Saturday, Jan. 10: “Six Dates for Catholic Couples” — Consider making a New Year’s resolution to spend more quality time with your spouse. All married couples are invited to participate in “Six Dates for Catholic Couples,” an opportunity to invest in your loving, happy marriage.

These once-a-month evenings begin with an opportunity to attend 4:30 p.m. Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas (602 Everglade Dr., Madison). Immediately after Mass, come to the social hall for a brief social and presentation. By 6:15, couples leave for a date night with a marriage-enriching topic for conversation. This is the first of the “Six Dates.”

Rorate Mass: an Advent tradition

PINE BLUFF — “I should get up when and drive where for what? For Mass?!? But it’s a Saturday!”

There is a centuries long tradition during Advent called the “Rorate Mass.” These Masses are generally offered during Advent on Saturdays, the customary day to honor the Blessed Virgin.

Mass begins in the darkness before dawn. Remember, Advent is a penitential season after all.

St. Peter Catholic School plans Christmas program

MIDDLETON — St. Peter Catholic School’s Christmas Program will take place on Monday, Dec. 15, at 6:30 pm.

This year’s program will feature the musical Miracle at Midnight performed by pre-K to fifth grade students. The moving story includes Bethlehem’s mayor preparing for a decree by Caesar Augustus, angels in heaven anticipating an important announcement, and a young couple from Nazareth getting ready for the birth of their first child.

Advent reflection for adults in DeForest

DEFOREST — There will be an adult night of Advent reflection Monday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. at St. Olaf Church, 623 Jefferson St., DeForest.

The Parish and Community Life Commission has planned a quiet evening of reflection to begin the Advent season. All parishioners and their guests are invited to “prepare the way.”

Marie Lins from the Diocese of Madison Office of Evangelization and Catechesis will be the guest speaker.

Janesville teen finalist in cooking contest

JANESVILLE — An eighth grader at St. William School needs your help to win $30,000 for his school.

Elijah Thurner and his family are finalists in the Ben’s Beginners Cooking Contest, sponsored by Uncle Ben’s rice.

The contest was developed to encourage children to make healthier choices by getting them interested in cooking at an early age. The goal is also to empower parents to connect with their children one meal at a time and aims to make cooking an enjoyable activity that brings families together.

Annual quilt show to be held in Waunakee

WAUNAKEE — St. John’s Piecemakers Quilt Club in Waunakee will host its 14th annual “Quilting through the Ages” quilt show on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the St. John School gym, 114 E. Third St.

More than 150 quilts will be displayed along with quilts that will be donated to local charities. There will be a silent auction and quilt sale benefitting the Waunakee Food Pantry. Luncheon items will be served by the Ashton Go-Getters 4-H Club.

Rosary Crusades scheduled

FORT ATKINSON/GREEN LAKE — Area residents are invited to participate in the 2014 Public Square Rosary Crusade to be held in Green Lake and Fort Atkinson.

They are part of over 12,000 rallies to be held on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11 and 12, throughout the country.

Oktoberfest to be held in Highland

HIGHLAND — Pick up the kids on Sunday, Oct. 5, and come on over to Ss. Anthony and Philip Church, 726 Main St. in Highland. There is lots of parking!

We start our Oktoberfest at 9 a.m. with a Polka Mass. If you’ve never praised the Lord this way, this is a unique and lively experience.

Then come outside for a cup of free coffee and nibbles and watch your kids help smash the pumpkin piñata and compete in a seed spitting contest. Let yourself be decorated with Mr. Greene’s balloons.
