March for Life returns to Madison

Rain or shine, life is precious and a gift from God.

More than 500 people were probably reflecting on that as they marched from St. Patrick Church in Madison to the State Capitol on January 22 — the 45th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade U.S. Supreme Court decision to legalize abortion at all stages of pregnancy in all 50 states.

Thanks for work of volunteers who erected Nativity display at State Capitol

To the editor:

Thanks to Sr. Therese Wolf, FSPA, who receives the Catholic Herald and shares it with me, I keep abreast of the Madison area events.

I was delighted to read that the Nativity scene is now displayed at our State Capitol! Thank you, Geralyn Ketterman, a staunch pro-lifer with whom I’ve many memories of praying/witnesssing at the “former” Rockford Abortion Mill, distributing literature and many other human life promoting activities.

Nativity display at State Capitol is the right thing to do

This year a group of families from the Diocese of Madison decided to sponsor a Nativity display at the State Capitol.

“For the thousands of folks that will visit the Capitol with their children and grandchildren, the Nativity will remind everyone that Jesus is the reason for this special season,” said Geralyn Kettermann of St. Joseph Parish in Edgerton in a letter that was published in our paper.

How about a ‘Dairy State March for Life’?

To the editor:

On January 22, 1973, the great scourge of legalized abortion was thrust upon our country with the enactment of Roe v. Wade.

Hundreds of thousands of American Christians from across the country make the annual pilgrimage each January to the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court as a reminder that the killing of innocent children is very wrong and grieves our dear Lord.

Help sponsor Nativity scene at State Capitol

To the editor:

A couple of families from the Diocese of Madison will be sponsoring a life-size Nativity scene at our State Capitol, and we would like to invite others to help us make this display truly inspiring.

For the thousands of folks that will visit the Capitol with their children and grandchildren, the Nativity will remind everyone that Jesus is the reason for this special season.

Veterans grateful to be able to visit war memorials

To the editor:

I really enjoyed the article about the VetsRoll very much. Mark and John Finnegan, with their mother Barbara present,  received the Governor’s Certification of Appreciation for their great work at the November 7 annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the State Capitol in Madison.

Praying for life, family, conversion

As the Rosary of bright yellow “Life” balloons was lifted above the Capitol building June 21, it paused a moment, suspended and twisting in the wind above the southwest wing, before rising further into the heavens.

Make your voice heard to protect the poor and vulnerable at state, federal levels

editor's view by Mary C. Uhler

We have been hearing so much about the fiscal challenges facing our state and national governments. Sometimes we may feel so frustrated that we don’t do anything.

But now is not the time to stand back. It is time to make your voice heard with your elected representatives at the state and federal levels. In this week’s Catholic Herald, we have published some suggestions on how to contact your legislators effectively. Many of these suggestions come from the Wisconsin Catholic Conference (WCC), the public policy arm of our state’s Catholic bishops.

Rally defends truth of one man, one woman

MADISON — In terms of sheer numbers, if not volume, the counter-protestors won.

Hundreds marched up State St. towards the State Capitol where no more than 30 people stood waiting for the “One Man, One Woman” rally to begin at noon July 27. Standing on the Capitol steps, it was impossible not to hear them coming, shouting slogans as they went.

An overheard comment on the steps of the Capitol between two members of the media likened the scene to that in Lord of the Rings as the horde marches to battle, suggesting cutting shots of the protesters with shots from the movie.

But through it all, even when the crowd reached the Capitol and began shouting from the other side of the thin barrier of police tape, those people within the yellow-taped area stood firmly, silently. Some held signs; others held rosaries or children.

“Thank you to those with the courage to stand up for marriage,” Maggie Gallagher, president of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), said to the crowd, which some estimates put at 50 rally supporters. “It takes courage to stand in the public square and say it takes a man and a woman to make marriage.”
