Do you have a story?

If you’re anything like me — and I’m sorry for that — you’re probably brushing that notion off and thinking you do not have a story. You’re just a plain, boring, ordinary Catholic.

We need less bad news and more Good News

kevin-editorial

I’m a news junkie. Anyone who works in news, or who has ever worked in news, has a little bit of that in them.

It’s a constant desire to know what’s going on, know the latest information, and know as much about what is going on as we can.

Then — us being us — we want to tell everyone about it.

Today, sharing news and information is easier than ever with Facebook, Twitter, and other forms of social media and communication.

Getting more of the latest information is also easier than ever with all of the digital and online channels available to be consumed.

A ‘beautiful’ priesthood for Bishop Hying

“It’s a call that comes to you through God, obviously mediating through others, and through our experience,” said Bishop Donald J. Hying of Madison.

In his first year as the fifth Bishop of Madison, Bishop Hying is celebrating 30 years of priesthood.

While now the spiritual shepherd of the diocese, Bishop Hying’s journey began like that of many men — discerning and living out a call to the priesthood.

“Every priest really has a vocation narrative,” he said.

Embracing Christ by loving your cross

Everyday Faith column by Julianne Nornberg

Not long ago, dear friends of ours tragically had to lay their tiny precious baby, Maria, to rest.

At her funeral, Maria’s brothers helped carry her small white casket and her sister followed with a bouquet of roses. My friends and their toddler walked behind, supporting each other through tears.

At 32 weeks, Maria had unexpectedly died in the womb. Since then, my friends have been shouldering unimaginable suffering, wondering if they will ever again be free of the incomparable grief of parents who lose a child.

Former Protestant minister to speak at Monona parish

MONONA — Former Protestant minister Bruce Sullivan will present his life-changing conversion story at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 5101 Schofield St., on Thursday, July 23, from 7 to 9 p.m.

As a former Church of Christ minister, Bruce Sullivan was a zealous apostle for what he believed to be the true Gospel. As such, he was also ardently anti-Catholic. In fact, his dream was to be a missionary to the largest Catholic nation in the world — Brazil.

All of that changed, however, when he was confronted with the truth and beauty of the Catholic faith while trying to “evangelize” a Catholic family that had moved into his community.

Tracing ancestors makes history come alive

grand mom

Must we live through a lot of history before we love history? Must we be an antique before we appreciate antiques?

My fascination with ancestors just took off this year when Janine, my daughter-in-law, discovered a Luxembourg Museum in her Wisconsin territory. For Christmas she and my son John bought me a year’s membership and took me for a visit soon after. What an exciting adventure!

Let us joyfully tell the story anew!

The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, January 9, 2011 marks the beginning of the National Vocation Awareness Week.

Guest Column

While the Baptism of Christ focuses on the revelation of Christ as the “Beloved Son of God,” it reminds us of our own Baptism.

Baptism marks the beginning of our “vocation”as Christians.

By virtue of our Baptism, we also share in the three-fold mission of Christ to be priest, prophet, and king.
