Refugee policy violates U.S. and international law

To the editor:

What Mr. Trump and Mr. Sessions are doing is in violation of international law, and our law, protecting asylum seekers and refugees. It is also a violation of the eighth and 14th Amendments to our Constitution. The inhumane policy of separating young children from their parents will result in irreparable psychological harm.

Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) was denied access to the immigration center where children are being held. He did tour a processing center where children were being held in cages with nets over them to prevent escape.

Let’s treat immigrants with compassion, respect

Norma, who came to the United States with her family in 2011, talked with KSAT 12 News, an ABC affiliate in San Antonio, Texas, on June 24 about why she immigrated to the United States.

She hoped that by telling her story, more people will understand why some risk everything for life in the United States.

Let’s get something done for Dreamers

When I think about the DACA program, Alan comes to my mind. His story was highlighted in an article published early this year in the Catholic Herald.

The article discussed immigrants who have received help at the Catholic Multicultural Center (CMC) in Madison.

Time to set aside politics and protect our children

They were looking for answers, not just platitudes, as a group of students and parents affected by school gun violence met with President Donald Trump on February 21.

Faced with the personal anguish wrought by the most recent school shooting in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 dead, President Trump pledged action, saying, “We don’t want others to go through the kind of pain you’ve been through.”

Wisconsin bishops respond to termination of DACA

MADISON — The Catholic bishops of Wisconsin have issued the following statement in response to the Trump administration’s announced termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program six months from now:

“The bishops of Wisconsin affirm their support for the continued protection of youth under the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Most of the nearly 8,000 DACA Wisconsinites, who are among almost 800,000 DACA young adults nationwide, know no other home than the U.S., having been brought here in their youth through no choice of their own.

State Catholic Conference urges action on refugees

MADISON — The Wisconsin Catholic Conference (WCC), public policy arm of the state’s Catholic bishops, issued an action alert on February 3 calling on concerned citizens to take action in solidarity with refugees.

The WCC said that President Donald Trump has issued an Executive Order with “devastating impacts on refugee resettlement in the United States.”

Support our immigrant brothers and sisters

“For I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me” (Mt 25:35).

All of us (except Native Americans) who live in the United States are descended from immigrants.

My own ancestors came from Ireland, Germany, and Belgium seeking a better life in this country for themselves and their families. Most of them were Catholic, so they also wanted a place where they could worship freely.

Immigrants have continued to come to the United States. Many are welcomed by the Statue of Liberty in New York City’s harbor with words inscribed on the statue’s pedestal that say: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”
