Get involved in the election process

We’ve been inundated with presidential election news for many months, but most of the activity has been happening in other states.

Soon the election process will get underway in Wisconsin. In our state, the spring primary election will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 16. This primary is for nonpartisan state and local candidates.

The spring election and presidential preference vote (presidential primary) will be held on Tuesday, April 5.

Resources for voters prepared

MADISON — The Wisconsin Catholic Conference (WCC), the public policy voice of Wisconsin’s bishops, is distributing a series of resources to help Catholics reflect on their duties as faithful citizens.

The series is designed for parish bulletins, but it can also be reproduced on a parish website or as a series of posters.

John Huebscher, executive director of the WCC, explained that the bishops are “modeling the Catholic duty to engage in public life in an informed, consistent, and respectful manner.”

We should always vote

To the editor:

Unfortunately this will reach you after the November 6th elections. I just read the October 25th issue and in reading the Mailbag, I must comment about the reader who wrote that he would not vote if he found fault with all candidates.

Misguided values should not control our lives

To the editor:

We are parents of 10 children (nine living), unplanned parenthood if you choose to call it that. We have never owned a new automobile nor have we relied on food stamps or unemployment compensation for which we may have qualified at times.

Our children were taught personal responsibility in the context of strong Catholic education. These children, with our 29 grandchildren, are welcome members in the communities where they reside. The eighth child is a Catholic priest. Collectively, our children hold five master’s degrees and speak 11 languages.

Family size should not be judged numerically, but rather on the ability to care for and guide the children. Two children can be too many, and five too few.

Living in a democracy: We are very fortunate to live in the United States of America

editor's view by Mary C. Uhler

Throughout the world there seems to be a hunger for freedom and democracy. Almost every day there are people demonstrating for a better way of life in countries all around the world.

In the United States, we fought that battle hundreds of years ago and won our freedom. We established a democratic form of government with three branches of government: executive (the president), legislative (Congress with two houses), and judicial (our court system).

Apply faith to voting

To the editor:

It is necessary that we vote according to our properly formed consciences as Catholic Christians. We have to stand up for what we believe and cannot check our Catholic faith outside the voting booth.

The right to life of every human person from conception to natural death is the primary and thus the most essential of all human rights. We should remember that the poorest of the poor is the human person in the womb that is menaced with abortion.
