Same-sex marriage: Why it should not be considered a ‘civil right’

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

In 2006, citizens in Wisconsin approved a “Marriage Protection Amendment” to the state Constitution by a “yes” vote of 59.4 percent of the voters.

Wisconsin voters upheld the definition of marriage as “one man and one woman.” The state’s Catholic bishops had encouraged citizens to protect this definition of marriage.  John Huebscher, executive director of the Wisconsin Catholic Conference, commented in 2006, “In their votes . . . the people of Wisconsin reaffirmed their intention to preserve the one man, one woman institution of marriage in our state.”

Same-sex couples bring lawsuits

Now, over seven years later, there are four same-sex couples suing our governor and other public officials in an attempt to overturn Wisconsin’s amendment to the state constitution banning same-sex marriage.

Personhood campaign seeks to extend protection to preborn children

To the editor:

Personhood is the fundamental civil rights issue of our time. The pro-life movement is founded on the bedrock principle that all human beings, at all stages of development, deserve full protection under the law.

Our nation’s history of civil rights progress has been fueled by this principle. But one injustice remains: the legal discrimination against pre-born babies, who can be freely mutilated and killed throughout all nine months of pregnancy.

The Wisconsin Personhood campaign seeks to pass an amendment to the state constitution legally recognizing that all preborn human beings are “persons” whose unalienable right to life is protected by the state.

Let us pray for preservation of gift of religious freedom

To the editor:

Thank you for the December 29 editorial on Faith and Public Life and for coverage the last few months of the recent efforts by U.S. bishops in ongoing defense of religious freedom.

Let us love one another as Jesus loves us, especially by praying in secret and by meditating on Jesus and the Father and their teachings as Mary, Handmaid of the Father and Queen assumed into heaven, meditates.

Personhood amendment promotes helpful discussion

To the editor:

The introduction of a personhood amendment to the Wisconsin Constitution provides a wonderful opportunity to engage our neighbors in the critical question of how we treat young people in our state.

Many citizens have not been exposed to the joyful message of hope found in the encyclical Humanae Vitae of the Servant of God Pope Paul VI, and do not realize how contraception poisons our culture and even the intimate relationships of spouses.

Defund Planned Parenthood and protect preborn babies

To the editor:

Marie Gestrich, in her May 12  letter to the editor, provided excellent information on Planned Parenthood. Who wants to pay for killing human preborn babies?  What we can do to defund Planned Parenthood?

Planned Parenthood is Wisconsin’s largest provider of abortion. It’s time to stop our taxes from being used to fund their abortion/birth control industry. Let’s defund Planned Parenthood.
