St. Teresa inspires work today

When we think of the work of St. Teresa (or Mother Teresa as we’ll always know her), we remember her helping the poor, sick, and homeless people in the slums of Calcutta.

But do we realize that there are poor and homeless people right in our own communities? It was shocking for me to read about poverty in our own state in a report issued by the Institute for Research on Poverty at the University of  Wisconsin-Madison.

Surge in voter turnout needs to continue

On Independence Day, I saw many in the Badger State wearing red, white, and blue. Like some of you, I “liked” statements on social media asserting national pride and joined in singing patriotic songs at Mass.

These celebrations affirm our democracy and recognize those who have protected our founding freedoms.

Importance of elections

However after reviewing past election results, I was reminded that everyone enjoys the celebration, but many people don’t like the planning. Elections are how we as citizens plan our government.

“That time in my life was very confusing,” shared Amanda. “I had recently dropped out of college due to stress, anxiety, and depression. And then I found out I was pregnant . . . I just didn’t know what to do.”

Amanda and her boyfriend, Brandon (names changed), came to Care Net feeling nervous, scared, and “a little lost.” They were greeted by “open arms and smiling faces.”

Soon the election process will get underway in Wisconsin. In our state, the spring primary election will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 16. This primary is for nonpartisan state and local candidates.

The spring election and presidential preference vote (presidential primary) will be held on Tuesday, April 5.

The Catholic bishops of Wisconsin through the Wisconsin Catholic Conference have issued the following statement on the terrorist attacks and the refugee situation in Syria.

The Catholic bishops of Wisconsin join bishops across the United States in expressing our deepest condolences to the French people for the horrific loss of life at the hands of ISIS terrorists. There is no justification for such barbarism, especially when done in the name of God.
