Bishop asks for prayers to defeat evil in world
Dear Friends,
I pray that you and yours enjoyed a very happy Thanksgiving this past week.
Further, I hope that you are able to enter into a very blessed season of Advent. Please God, it will be an excellent time of preparation for the glorious celebration of Christmas.
Last week, I sent a letter to your priests with regard to an addition to the Prayers of the Faithful and a particular prayer of heavenly intercession I am asking to be included during (at least) every Sunday Mass, at parishes within the Diocese of Madison.
The world is awash with weapons

If someone’s house was on fire, would you pour gasoline on it? Well, the answer is obvious: Of course you wouldn’t. Yet that is very similar to what the United States and many other more economically developed nations are doing.
Despite the tragic fact that approximately 40 current armed conflicts worldwide are causing over 150,000 deaths annually, countless serious injuries, untold destruction, and 28,300 people per day fleeing from their homes, many of the wealthiest countries continue to pour flammable weapons into these volatile conflicts. And the U.S. is leading the pack (see: http://bit.ly/2ufpP5Y).
World Youth Day 2016: Source of hope

When I arrived in Kraków for the 2016 World Youth Day, I was pretty exhausted, having left Los Angeles some 15 hours earlier and having had to change planes in Munich.
But I was enthused as I approached my first appointment right in the heart of the Old City. Through the good ministrations of George Weigel, the world’s leading expert on John Paul II, I was one of a group of bishops and priests invited to spend time with the original youth group of Fr. Karol Wojtyła.
Diocesan youth make pilgrimage to Poland
In the first week of August, Pope Francis will meet hundreds of thousands of young people, including nearly 140 from Madison, in Krakow, Poland, to teach the young about the mercy of Christ in this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy.
This year’s World Youth Day theme is: “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Mt 5:7).

The youth of Madison are travelling in primarily two groups: one from St. Paul University Catholic Center in Madison, led by Fr. Eric Nielsen, and the other led by Fr. Brian Dulli.
We can transform the world

You are the light of the world. Don’t take my word for it, that’s Gospel truth from Jesus himself (Mt 5:14). And it’s a tall order, indeed.
Now on the other hand in John’s Gospel, Jesus says, “I am the light of the world.” Now that at first glance makes far more sense. After all, Jesus — God in the flesh — is obviously “the light of the world.”
‘Eucharistic Miracles of the World’ exhibit to be held at Boscobel parish
BOSCOBEL — The Vatican International “Eucharistic Miracles of the World” exhibit will be at Corpus Christi Parish, at the Immaculate Conception Church hall in Boscobel, on May 27 to 29: Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon to 9 p.m. The exhibit is open to the public.
Eucharistic Adoration will be available in the church while the exhibit is on, followed by Benediction each day. The DVD Science Tests Faith, a presentation on research done in this area, will also be on display in the hall. People willing to be adorers for Adoration during the exhibit would be welcomed.

The exhibit, which features large posters depicting miracles in the Holy Eucharist from across the world, is sponsored by the Real Presence Eucharistic Education and Adoration Association.
‘Healing of the Heart’ retreat coming to Durward’s Glen
BARABOO — Fr. Christopher Crotty will lead two “Healing of the Heart: Mission of Christ in the Modern World” retreats at Durward’s Glen Retreat and Educational Center.
According to Father Crotty, “We are healed and set free in Christ Jesus to proclaim His Wonders!” He will focus on Christ’s healing during this retreat.
The first retreat will be held May 20 to 22, starting Friday night at 6 p.m. and ending on Sunday at 12 noon. The second retreat will be held June 3 to 5, starting Friday night at 6 p.m. and ending Sunday at 12 noon.
Theme eight: A Home for the Wounded Heart

In conjunction with the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia this past September, the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis of the Diocese of Madison is providing a monthly series on a particular theme on marriage and family. Each theme is a chapter in the preparatory catechesis developed for the event entitled Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive, available in paperback from www.osvparish.com or for free online at www.worldmeeting2015.org

Dear Friends,
Thanksgiving is at the heart of what we do and who we are as a faithful Catholic people.
And so, while there is a great deal to be terribly concerned about in our world, in our nation, and in our own part of the country, there is also a great deal for which we each can offer our thanks to God — which is the origin and the reason for the holiday that is upon us.
On a personal level, I have a great deal for which to be thankful.
In terms of my friends and those with whom I am blessed to serve, I am just that — terribly blessed. Thanks be to God, it’s been another year of good health, and for that too, I cannot fail to be thankful.
