Barack Obama is opposed to teachings of the Church

On October 23, 2008
Timothy Rookey, Middleton

To the editor:

I cannot understand how any practicing Catholic, in good conscience, could possible vote for Barack Obama for president. Let me count the ways he is diametrically opposed to the teachings of the Church:

1. He supports the Freedom of Choice bill that will codify into law the absolute right to abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. All state restrictions on abortion, such as parental consent laws, will be nullified and our tax dollars will go to pay for abortions.

2. On four occasions, Obama fought and killed the Infant Born Alive Act in Illinois that mandated medical care for children who survived botched abortions. He stated that such infants were not “persons” with a right to live.

3. Obama says his biggest regret as a U.S. senator was his vote to keep the bedridden Terri Shiavo on a feeding tube until the courts could decide her fate. She was eventually “euthanized” in a crueler fashion than any family pet could expect to suffer.

4. Senator Obama says he opposes same sex marriage but promises to rescind the federal Defense of Marriage Act. This will, in very short order, have the effect of forcing all 50 states to accept gay marriage.

These are just some of the reasons why Catholics should reject Barack Obama’s candidacy. Senator McCain and Governor Palin are both pro-life and pro-traditional family. They deserve our vote this November!
