Law encourages children to become sexually active

On February 18, 2010
David Kuhle, Hazel Green

To the editor:

What in the darkness of Hades has possessed the Democrats in the Wisconsin Legislature to pass the falsely-named Healthy Youth Act (AB 458/SB 324)? This bill requires teachers of human growth and development to make our children proficient in contraception.

I do not want our 12-year-old children handed a cucumber and a condom to prove they know how to engage in sexual activity. Condoms do not eliminate venereal disease and pregnancy, but do invite sexual activity.

This bill requires that if a district teaches sexual education, it shall not teach abstinence as the only 100 percent safe way to eliminate sexual disease and pregnancy, and prohibits teachers from telling children that sexual activity is wrong.

One child, infinitely more valuable, deserves much more protection than our animals and pets, for whom we go to great lengths to prohibit sexual activity — unless we want them to reproduce. Sexual activity is dangerous for our children. It cannot be made “safe.”

The Healthy Youth Act encourages our children to become sexually active because it teaches our children how to be good at sex rather than helping parents prevent sexual activity.
