United States forced to use atomic bombs in war

On October 7, 2010
Ray McCool

To the editor:

Kudos to Don Skarda for his letter of September 16 referring to Tony Magliano’s article in the August 19 Catholic Herald regarding the United States’ use of the atomic bombs.

Finally someone has stood up to Mr. Magliano’s comments about the guilt he tried to place on the U.S.A. for using the bombs on Japan during World War II.

Of course war is hell. But Mr. Magliano displayed his ignorance in having absolutely no concept of what it was like to live during the time when the leaders of the Axis powers were raining havoc all over the globe.

Those of us on the home front who had loved ones in service lived from day to day hoping never to receive the telegram that we lost a brother, a father, a son in the war.

We warned the Japanese leaders that a weapon of unbelieveable destruction was imminent if they did not surrender, and they ignored it. Let us not forget what the Japanese did to Nanking, the Bataan Death March, and Pearl Harbor.

Ray McCool, Madison
