It’s soil, not dirt

On June 5, 2014
Emmett Schulte

To the editor:

I enjoyed your editorial on “Taking Care of Creation” in the May 29 issue of the Catholic Herald.

However, I was sorely disappointed when, in the fourth paragraph, you referred to soil as  “dirt”  (“ . . . to test the temperature of the dirt this year”).

Dirt is soil out of place, just as a weed is a plant in the wrong place.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Emmett Schulte, Professor (Emeritus) Soil Science, Madison
