One candidate is best prepared for presidency

On November 3, 2016
Gregory L. Sheehy, M.D.

To the editor:

Recent letters to the editor have tried mightily to avoid saying the name, but encourage us, just the same, to vote for the Republican candidate. The plea is to support the Republican Party platform and to view abortion above all other issues. There appears to be little concern about electing a man to the most important position in the world despite his racist, sexist, xenophobic, and anti-religious views. Likewise, his election would allow his finger to be on the nuclear button that could eliminate all life on earth.

I respect the right of every citizen to vote for the candidate of his or her choice. Yet, this candidate is a man who has shown neither the knowledge nor the temperament to be president of the United States.

To believe that he would be loyal to the Republican platform is quite a stretch. How loyal was he to dedicated Republicans like Mitt Romney, George H. W. Bush, or Paul Ryan when they offered constructive criticism of his behavior?

As a Catholic, I will not apologize for my support for the Democratic candidate. She is clearly the best prepared person for the presidency. She does not meet all of my expectations, but no political candidate ever has. Still, on most life issues such as devastating climate change, life saving health care, gun violence reduction, immigration compassion, and avoidance of war, she is far superior. Innocents who die are not always just those in the womb.

Gregory L. Sheehy, M.D., Middleton
