One candidate stands up for life and religious liberty

On November 3, 2016
Timothy Rookey

To the editor:

Catholics will be very influential in determining who will become our next president. The choice is really only between the candidates of our two major parties. Though neither candidate this year is ideal, I would argue that one of them is far superior to the other from a Catholic point of view.

One of the candidates now substantially embraces the pro-life position and has promised, as president, to only appoint pro-life justices, like the late Antonin Scalia, to the Supreme Court. The other candidate wants no restrictions on abortion and is the darling of America’s largest abortion provider-Planned Parenthood.

One pledges to defend our religious freedoms and has even vowed to allow clergy to express their political views from the pulpit without fear of losing their tax exempt status. The other one is very hostile to our religious freedoms and would force all taxpayers to help fund abortions by eliminating the Hyde Amendment. That candidate is also completely beholden to the gay lobby and would persecute anyone standing against their radical agenda. Bakers and photographers would continue to be fined or jailed for refusing to violate their religious beliefs in not providing services they consider sinful.

No Catholic in good conscience can vote for one of these two candidates! The other, though quite imperfect, but with a very devout Christian as vice-president at this side, will truly make America morally great again by standing up for life and religious liberty.

Timothy Rookey, Middleton
