Penalties for harming animals, but not people

To the editor:

One of our most precious gifts is the gift of love, which we give to people and animals. We want all to enjoy life on earth.

We can go to jail or pay a fine for torturing and killing animals, even before they are born or hatched, like an eagle egg.

Knife control vs. gun control legislation

To the editor:

As I watched the president wipe away a tear in announcing his new gun legislation, I wondered, “Is this  the same man who proclaimed, ‘God bless Planned Parenthood’”?

Though President Obama’s compassion for the victims of Sandy Hook is commendable, what a tremendous disconnect to his callous support of an organization that kills, mutilates, and profits from the dirty business of abortion.

WISCONSIN DELLS — The annual Frassati Fest weekend for teens is set for Friday, Feb. 5, to Sunday, Feb. 7, at Kalahari Resorts and Conventions in Wisconsin Dells.

Frassati Fest provides inspiring catechesis, prayer, good conversation, and an opportunity for teens to dive deeper into the beauty of the Catholic faith with hundreds of their peers.

It’s called “the coolest weekend around for Catholic high school students in the Diocese of Madison.”

Requiem Mass for the unborn

PINE BLUFF — There will be a Requiem Mass for the unborn celebrated on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m. at St. Mary of Pine Bluff Church, 3673 County Road P, Cross Plains.

This Mass will be celebrated in memory of all who have died from abortion in the Diocese of Madison in the past year.

Women and men who have experienced the pain and anguish of having had an abortion — or being involved in one — find a liturgy for the unborn to be a source of hope and grace.

Men’s retreat at Durward’s Glen January 30

BARABOO — On Saturday, Jan. 30, St. Joseph Parish in Baraboo will be hosting a men’s retreat titled, “Men of Mercy” at Durward’s Glen.

This year’s featured speaker is Fr. Scott Jablonski, parochial vicar at St. Bernard and St. Henry Parishes in Watertown. Activities during the day include Mass, small group discussion, Rosary, Confession, and Adoration.

The retreat begins with Mass at 8 a.m. and concludes by 3:30 p.m. New this year, there will be an optional Friday night program beginning at 7 p.m. for those who want to extend their retreat.

Theology on Tap for young adults set for January 28

MADISON — Theology on Tap for young adults will meet on Thursday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. at the Brink Lounge, 701 E Washington Ave.

Msgr. Kevin Holmes, pastor of Cathedral Parish in Madison, will speak on “Are Catholics Allowed to Think? The Intellectual Tradition of the Christian Faith.”

This lecture, on the feast of St. Thomas Aquinas, will focus on if religion relies on ignorance and superstition, fighting against scientific knowledge to protect a medieval faith, or if Catholics are “allowed to think.”
