More to being ‘practicing Catholic’

To the editor:

I am writing about John Joy’s piece in the Diocese section of your November 23 edition.

I am concerned that the conference of Catholic educators, John, and others have missed the point of the Bible and the Church. What was given as the “meaning to be a ‘Practicing Catholic’” is more a list of assumed credentials for an acting Catholic but not a practicing Catholic.

Ban assault rifles for civilians

To the editor:

A letter to the editor in the November 30 Catholic Herald stated: “Problem does not lie with guns . . .”

In several of the recent mass murders, the disturbed gunman used many weapons, including semiautomatic assault rifles. Without that weapon, many fewer people would have died.

Do our part to live Laudato Si’

To the editor:

Your recent article on St. Dennis Parish’s solar panel installation is welcome news.  Congratulations to Fr. Randy Timmerman for embracing and acting on the message of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’. St. Dennis is leading by example and paving the way for their parishioners and more parishes in the diocese to do likewise.

I am also grateful for the article informing parishes that there is grant funding available from RENEW Wisconsin to assist in the costs of installing solar. Parishes who are struggling to find the time to explore energy options can simplify the process by checking out Catholic Energies at https://catholicenergies.org

Sacred Hearts School holds personal care items drive

SUN PRAIRIE — For the seventh year, Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary School in Sun Prairie held a personal care drive to help fill a local food pantry’s need for those items.

This year, students were asked to “Cram the Cart” in the school entryway with items such as deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo, diapers, laundry detergent, dish soap, and other personal care items.

By the last day of the drive, the large cart was overflowing, with bags and boxes surrounding it.

Bishop asks for prayers to defeat evil in world

Dear Friends,

I pray that you and yours enjoyed a very happy Thanksgiving this past week.

Further, I hope that you are able to enter into a very blessed season of Advent. Please God, it will be an excellent time of preparation for the glorious celebration of Christmas.

Last week, I sent a letter to your priests with regard to an addition to the Prayers of the Faithful and a particular prayer of heavenly intercession I am asking to be included during (at least) every Sunday Mass, at parishes within the Diocese of Madison.

Thrift store in Beloit seeks to continue serving people in need

BELOIT — Since opening its larger thrift store, Beloit St. Vincent de Paul Society volunteers agree there has been a notable increase in customers. The customers often express their appreciation for the inviting, expanded store area.

After operating its store in about 1,500 square feet for the past 30 years, last spring the society purchased the adjoining building at 614 Fourth St. Now with 4,444 square feet of space, there is room for appliances and furniture as well as clothing and household items.

Problem does not lie with guns but the human beings who use them

To the editor:

This is in response to Mr. Christopher White’s article in the November 23 issue.

One thing that seems lost in all the recent discussion of violence in America these days is that the problem is not inanimate objects like guns — it is the human being that makes a decision to use these objects to harm others.
