Strive to make all schools welcoming to the disabled

On September 5, 2019
Vanessa Hensey

To the editor:

I enjoyed reading your article on “A dozen reasons to choose Catholic schools”.  The list was spot on, except for number 12, “We provide a safe and welcoming environment for all.”

Many Catholic schools are unable to enroll children with disabilities. I find this very disconcerting, as our faith is all about welcoming and helping the least of us.

This is what Jesus taught us. Children with disabilities are precious gifts from God who teach us how to love and serve more fully. They also highlight the blessings we are given that we often take for granted.

Yes, they cost more to educate because of a higher need for staff and training, but these precious souls are well worth it.

I have a brother, Luke, who has Emmanuel’s Syndrome. He is both physically and mentally challenged. It breaks my heart to know he wouldn’t be allowed in many of the Catholic schools in our own diocese.

I have learned and grown more fully in my faith just by being in Luke’s presence.  We need to strive to truly make our Catholic schools a welcoming environment for all.

Vanessa Hensey, Verona
