MADISON — Abortion facilities are dark, desolate places. Former Planned Parenthood Manager Sue Thayer knows this personally from her 17 years on the job at the Storm Lake, Iowa, Planned Parenthood.
Something happens, though, when peaceful volunteers show up to pray on the sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood. “With just one person out there, you bring the light of Christ,” said Thayer.
But, “chaos reigns inside,” she added.
According to Thayer, staff are already stressed out to meet the quotas that Planned Parenthood sets for each service, including abortion.Then, add to the mix that abortion-vulnerable women really DO accept help and resources from peaceful volunteers outside and choose life; this is hard on the quotas.
God also sometimes answers the prayers for an end to abortion by sudden internet glitches or backed-up toilets inside the facility.
These frustrations can suddenly open up hardened abortion workers like Thayer to God’s plan.
“Webcam abortion was the final straw for me. I spoke up and got fired,” Thayer explained.
Her abortion referral site prepared to facilitate chemical abortions, in which women only communicate remotely with a doctor via webcam without any physical exam.
Thayer, who had a misdirected desire to help women, couldn’t stomach meeting abortion quotas for this dangerous new service.
God broke through to Sue, eventually leading to her conversion and courageous decision to lead a 40 Days for Life campaign in front of her former workplace.
40-day campaign
40 Days for Life is a 40-day campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil in front of abortion facilities in order to end abortion.
Even though the Storm Lake Planned Parenthood seemed like a permanent scourge in the community, Thayer’s 40 Days for Life campaign quickly and unexpectedly led to the closure of the facility.
The light of Christ dispelled the darkness in Storm Lake.
Thayer went on to join the 40 Days for Life headquarters team as Director of Outreach.
Kick-off event
On Saturday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m., Thayer will address those present for the Madison 40 Days for Life kick-off event on the sidewalk in front of the east side Planned Parenthood abortion facility (3706 Orin Rd., Madison).
Thayer will join other pro-life speakers in exhorting the Madison community to bring the light of Christ to Planned Parenthood during Lent.
The 40 Days for Life campaign to end abortion will begin on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17, and conclude on Palm Sunday, March 28.
The vigil will run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day except Sundays.

“No matter what happens in our world, [40 Days for Life] is something tried and proven, based on biblical principles,” commented Thayer. “It saves lives.”
