Catholic Charities: Helping many in the Diocese of Madison

On March 18, 2010
Jane McGowan, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Madison

Guided by Catholic Social Teaching, the mission of Catholic Charities is to provide compassionate, caring service designed to help those in need.

Our key values and beliefs are:

Catholic Charities serves as a visible presence of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Madison by providing services that address the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of individuals and families. We develop self-sufficiency, protect, preserve, and promote the dignity of all people.

• All life is sacred, from conception to natural death. Everyone has a right to be treated with dignity and respect.

• There are inalienable rights which are the minimum conditions for life in the community. All people have a right to life, food, clothing, shelter, medical care, education, employment, and safety.

• All members of society have a special obligation to the poor and vulnerable.

Catholic Charities, Diocese of Madison, is affiliated with Catholic Charities USA, the nation’s largest nonprofit network of people helping people. We have served individuals and families in the 11-county area of the Diocese of Madison since 1946.

In 2009, Catholic Charities served approximately 30,000 people through our 28 programs and services. We reach out to those who are facing the challenges of aging; living with a developmental disability; experiencing abuse; dealing with a crisis pregnancy; longing to adopt an infant; having marital or family problems; needing basic food; or seeking help with alcohol or drug abuse.
Find out more about Catholic Charities on the Web at www.ccmadison.org

Our work is made possible with financial support from the Annual Catholic Appeal. In addition, we receive private donations, United Way support, county contracts, client fees, and foundation grants. We are governed by a Board of Directors comprised of area Catholic leaders; and we employ more than 200 individuals.

In addition to the 28 programs and services of Catholic Charities, we reach out to mature Catholics and aging persons in our community through our All Saints Neighborhood. The neighborhood was built as a residence, a place of worship, and a place to build friendships. The Neighborhood consists of apartment homes, cottages, condos, assisted living and memory care facility.

We also manage Hope Haven-Rebos United, a private nonprofit corporation serving the Dane County community for over 36 years. Hope Haven programs focus on persons experiencing difficulty with alcohol and other drug abuse issues.
