Sister Mary Catherine Ann Dahmen dies
BRIDGETON, Mo. — A funeral Mass was celebrated August 1 in the The Sarah Community chapel in Bridgeton, MO, for Sr. Mary Catherine Ann Dahmen, a Franciscan Sister of Mary for 56 years who provided housekeeping and dietary help for the sisters. Sister Mary Catherine Ann died July 28, 2013 at The Sarah Community. She was 103. Her burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.
Born on Easter Sunday in 1910, in Springfield Township, Wis., she left school after the sixth grade to help her mother care for the home and the children. She worked as a housekeeper until her father’s illness in 1952 brought her home to be with her mother. She then worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, Wis., where she met the Sisters of St. Mary. She entered the community in 1957 and received the name Sr. Mary Catherine Ann. She professed final vows on February 11, 1965. (In 1987, the Sisters of St. Mary of St. Louis and the Sisters of St. Francis of Maryville, Mo., reunited as the Franciscan Sisters of Mary.)

BELMONT — Hosted by the Grant Vicariate, the 59th annual meeting of the Madison Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (MDCCW) focused on the theme of “Uniting Women of Faith” and brought together women from throughout the 11-county Madison Diocese to the Belmont Convention Center recently.
MDCCW President Coreen Marklein, Baraboo, presided at the convention. Jeffrey Arrowood, Somerset, founder and director of From the Abbey, gave the keynote on “Take Control of Your Life.” He also led a shareshop on evangelization.
Another shareshop was presented on foster care and resulted in more than 100 backpacks and personal items donated by MDCCW to foster children.
Individual membership approved
Women may now join the MDCCW as individual members whether or not their parish is affiliated with MDCCW as a result of action taken at the convention.
Marklein thanked the members for voting unanimously to change the constitution and by-laws to allow individual membership. Because fewer parishes have councils that provide for membership in MDCCW, the change gives all diocesan women “an opportunity to unite and share our spirituality, leadership, and service with other women of the council in the Madison Diocese.”
As a result of the change, the website for the diocesan council, www.mdccw.com, includes a new brochure and membership form.

Continuing to fight for marriage

Responses from right-minded marriage proponents to the Supreme Court’s June 26 decisions in two cases involving the (re)definition of marriage seemed to come in three waves.
The immediate reaction, influenced no doubt by a partisan press, was that the friends of marriage had suffered a severe, and perhaps lethal, blow when the court first struck down the key provision of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), and then denied standing to those challenging the judicial overturn of California’s “Proposition 8,” an initiative that restored the classic meaning of marriage to California law.
Sacrament of Penance: examination of conscience
By Abbot Marcel Rooney, OSB

We have seen, in the first article about this sacrament, that three things are necessary for its valid celebration: contrition for the sins one has committed; confession to a priest of all serious sins; and satisfaction of the penance which is asked of the penitent.
