Fort Atkinson students take part in annual Rake-A-Thon

FORT ATKINSON — St. Joseph School recently participated in its third annual Rake-A-Thon.

The Rake-A-Thon, held on November 6, was a community service project that consisted of students, staff, and volunteers raking the lawns of parishioners.

The Rake-A-Thon was coordinated by second grade teacher Michele Simonson.

Ladies of Divine Mercy meet on November 20

PINE BLUFF — The Ladies of Divine Mercy will meet on Friday evening, Nov. 20, at St. Mary Church in Pine Bluff, 3673 CTH P, Cross Plains. All women are invited to attend.

The evening begins at 6 p.m. with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. An hour of Adoration will be followed by a reflection by Fr. David Carrano, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Reedsburg and chaplain of Catholic Charismatic Renewal for the Diocese of Madison.

St. Thérèse Lecture on November 20

MADISON — The fall presentation in the St. Thérèse Lecture Series presented by the Diocese of Madison will be Friday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel of the Bishop O’Connor Center in Madison.

It will be entitled “A Treasure of Inestimable Value: The Beauty of Liturgy,” and will be given by Abbot Marcel Rooney, OSB.

Abbot Rooney is president of the Orate Institute of Sacred Liturgy, Music, and Art. The institute is dedicated to the renewal of the sacred liturgy in our churches and other Catholic institutions.

MCFARLAND — Chili, one of America’s most popular soups, has a long and rich history. The number and variety of recipes grows daily.

Arguments lasting decades concerning the addition of meat to chili continue to rage without resolution and stories abound regarding its origins.

Enthusiasts of chili say one possible though far-fetched starting point comes from Sister Mary of Agreda, a Spanish nun in the early 1600s who never left her convent yet had out-of-body experiences in which her spirit was transported across the Atlantic to preach Christianity to the Indians.

Answering our call to holiness

Dear Friends,

As I write this column, we are in the midst of two days of the Church year, which call us both to hope and rejoicing, and also to deep prayer and reflection upon the core reality of Christianity.

The Solemnity of All Saints and the Commemoration of All Souls are, for the Church, where the rubber meets the road.

It is the time when we, who make up the Church Militant — the Church still fighting and struggling in this life — recall the whole Church Triumphant and Church Suffering.

Information workshop on Catholic funerals

MADISON — The Office of Worship of the Diocese of Madison is hosting a workshop about Catholic funerals on Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Auditorium Meeting Room at the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Pastoral Center, 702 S. High Point Rd.

November is the month in which the faithful offer fervent prayers for the dead. It is also a time to consider one’s own mortality. This informational evening is for those who wish to learn more about Catholic funerals and related rituals and who may even wish to consider a plan for their own funeral.

TV Mass marks fifth anniversary of Monsignor Campion’s death

MADISON — The weekly Mass airing on WISC-TV on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 7 a.m. will commemorate the fifth anniversary of the death of Msgr. Thomas Campion.

Monsignor Campion was the founding director of the Apostolate to the Handicapped of the Diocese of Madison in 1967. He served as the director until he died on November 12, 2010.

Msgr. Larry Bakke, the current apostolate director, will preside at the TV Mass, which will include many persons involved with the apostolate over the years.
