Camp closes as staff member diagnosed with flu

On June 23, 2009
Diocese of Madison Office of Communications

REEDSBURG — Campers and parents are being notified this morning that Camp Gray (a Catholic youth summer camp) will be closed until Sunday, July 5, after one staff member was confirmed as positive for the H1N1 (swine flu) virus, late Monday. Immediately upon learning of the confirmed case, camp directors decided to close the camp, for the health and well-being of the campers.

In a communication this morning, parents are being informed that “no staff member has been hospitalized and those complaining of flu-like symptoms are being isolated for seven days. We have consulted with our medical director Dr. Maureen Murphy, infectious disease specialists, the State Health Department, and the Diocese of Madison. They are all in agreement with our plan.

“If your child becomes ill with fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose or other flu-like symptoms, please call their healthcare provider and let them know that they may have been exposed to the H1N1 virus.”

The Camp Gray Website (www.campgray.com) includes the full text of the communication being sent to all campers and their parents. Also on the Camp Gray website is complete information regarding camp rebooking and refunds.

Camp Gray, located south of Baraboo, is owned by the Catholic Diocese of Madison, and funded by the generous support of our patrons and donors. Camp Gray is dedicated to nourishing the spiritual lives of children and adults in this beautiful natural setting. Programs that combine faith and fun are offered not just during summer camp but throughout the school year as well.

Due to the number of calls that need to be made by Camp Gray directors and staff members today, all media inquires should be directed to the Diocesan Office of Communications, 608-821-3033.
