Cannot justify ending war by targeting non-combatants

To the editor:

In response to Don Skarda’s article, “Dropping bombs was seen as necessary” (Catholic Herald, September 16, 2010), I think it is important to point out other elements that ought to be examined in an argument for or against military actions.

Sometimes, with regard to the dropping of atomic bombs on Japan, two arguments seem to arise. One is the argument that American lives were saved. The second argument is the one posited by Mr. Skarda in his article. It usually begins with the equivalent of “they started it.”

Teaching condemns indiscriminate acts of war

To the editor:

I write in response to Don Skarda’s letter of September 16 and Ray McCool’s letter of October 7, both in support of the decision to use atomic weapons on Japan in World War II. During this Respect Life month of October, I feel I cannot let these sentiments pass unchallenged as they fly in the face of Catholic teaching.

Both letters make appeals to emotion but refuse to consider the issues of morality involved. I would like to make two points:

Bishop Morlino connects with youth, defends values

To the editor:

On September 26, I had the opportunity to be part of the Sacrament of Confirmation of dozens of young Catholics at St. John Vianney Parish in Janesville. The event was made even more special thanks to the presence of Madison Bishop Robert Morlino. His connection with the young people — speaking to them in a language they understand — and his steadfast defense of basic Catholic values during his address were truly inspiring.

Deal with immigrants by enforcing labor laws

To the editor:

Tony Magliano’s column, “Immigration reform needed” (Catholic Herald, September 16, 2010), is correct on many points, but falls short on one of them. In his article he repeats the worn-out phrase that immigrants perform the work that Americans won’t. Nothing could be further from the truth.

There are thousands of jobs that are being performed by Americans on a daily basis that are not only undesirable but downright dangerous. Jobs, such as foundry work, powerhouses, shipyards, oil fields, etc. — most of which are covered by union contracts and state and federal health and safety regulations that make them attractive to an adventurous few.

Appreciated article on importance of farm safety

To the editor:

Jim Massey’s article entitled “Take Extra Safety Precautions During Harvest” (Catholic Herald, September 23, 2010) was timely. I have never lived on a farm, and I don’t claim to be a farmer. However, the article touched me because I grew up in a rural area.

Farm children and adults were my friends, classmates, and neighbors. I vividly recall persons whom our family knew who were in farm accidents. My grandpa had missing fingers from a farm accident. My mother often described the pain he suffered during damp weather.

United States forced to use atomic bombs in war

To the editor:

Kudos to Don Skarda for his letter of September 16 referring to Tony Magliano’s article in the August 19 Catholic Herald regarding the United States’ use of the atomic bombs.

Finally someone has stood up to Mr. Magliano’s comments about the guilt he tried to place on the U.S.A. for using the bombs on Japan during World War II.

Islamic religious freedom not being suppressed: But building a mosque near ground zero is not appropriate

To the editor:

With all due respect to Fr. Peter Daly (Catholic Herald, September 16, 2010), the “religious freedom” argument being used against those who oppose the building of the mosque near ground zero is a platitude that increasingly rings hollow. His comparison of this issue to the bigotry against Catholics in the 19th century strikes me simply as a false parallel.

Islam is not a religion that can tolerate other religions

To the editor:

In Fr. Peter Daly’s article (Catholic Herald September 16, 2010) on the intolerance that some Americans have for Muslims, he describes his cordial relationship with his Imam neighbor who gave him a copy of the Koran. Father Daly urges Americans not to blame Muslims for the actions of terrorists associated with Islam, saying, “We are not at war with Islam; we are at war with terrorists.”

Support adult stem cell research, not embryonic

To the editor:

Stand Up To Cancer, a one hour television program, aired September 10.  The teamwork of scientists and doctors from many institutes have benefited cancer survivors.

The most inspiring, truthful words were spoken by a doctor who said that Steve Hall survived his brain cancer because of a “vaccine made from his own brain tumor!” His own adult stem cells allowed his body cells to “cure himself.”  Please re-read this last sentence.  It is adult  stem cells that have cured multiple diseases, not embryonic stem cells obtained from embryos (human babies).
