Young people volunteer to clean cemetery

MADISON — A group of young people from St. Peter Parish in Ashton and St. Martin Parish in Martinsville recently dedicated one of their last summer Saturday mornings to honoring the faithful departed buried at Resurrection Cemetery in Madison.

The group, mostly confirmandi, met bright and early on the Saturday morning. After visiting the crypt of Bishop Robert C. Morlino and praying for him together, they proceeded to weed flower beds and trim back turf that was encroaching onto the in-ground grave markers in the cemetery’s lawn crypt area.

Choir awards scholarships

MADISON — The Madison Diocesan Choir awarded five Youth Pastoral Musician Scholarship Awards (YPMSA), at the choir’s spring concert on May 17 in the chapel at Holy Name Heights in Madison.

Linda Galang, the choir’s scholarship committee chair, introduced two of the five winners who were able to attend the concert.

The scholarship initiative is for middle and high school students who are active in their parish music ministries. A successful applicant can receive $500 to attend an approved summer music clinic.

Three Catholic schools enjoy trip to Gettysburg, Washington, D.C.

On Sunday, May 5, students from Watertown Catholic, Blessed Sacrament School in Madison, and St. Jerome School in Columbus boarded a bus bound for a five-day trip to Gettysburg, Pa., and Washington, D.C.

It was an adventure of a lifetime, and a great way to cap an almost 10-year career for some students at our schools.

Third annual ‘Catholic Kids for a Cause’ held in Jefferson

JEFFERSON — The Catholic community of St. John the Baptist (SJB) School and St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Jefferson recently gathered to participate in a fundraising event for the family of Addie Houston, a fifth grader at East Elementary School and great-niece of St. John’s principal, Bill Bare.

As news of Addie’s battle against leukemia reached the school and parish community, there were many inquiries as to how to best help and support the family.

MADISON — Camp GLOW (Giving Loved Ones Wings) is a grief support day camp for kids and their parents/guardians who are dealing with the loss of a loved one.

Staffed by SSM Health at Home spiritual and grief counselors and specially trained volunteers, the day camp gives kids the opportunity to share their grief in a safe space.
