‘Catholicism: It’s the story of the world. It’s your story.’ … and the Cathedral Parish is telling it

On September 29, 2011
Todd Burud, For the Catholic Herald

MADISON — The Cathedral Parish at St. Patrick Church, Madison, will present the acclaimed, multi-media documentary series, Catholicism, in 11 sessions between October, 2011, and February, 2012.

Catholicism features 10 hours of stunning, high-definition cinematography, filmed at 50 locations and in 15 countries. A study guide supplements the film and acts as a catalyst for group discussion.

Sweeping series

Fr. Robert Barron, a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago and professor at Mundelein Seminary, created and hosted this series. Word On Fire Catholic Ministries, founded by Father Barron, produced it, along with Picture Show Films.

The priest explains the purpose of this sweeping Catholicism series: “What makes Catholicism [the faith], among all of the competing philosophies, ideologies, and religions of the world, distinctive? . . . Catholicism is a matter of the body and the senses as much as it is a matter of the mind and the soul, because the Word became flesh. . . . Catholicism [the series] is a celebration, in words and imagery, of the God who takes infinite delight in bringing human beings to fullness of life.”

Catholicism reveals Catholic history and its effect upon the world by appealing to our senses. It brings the viewer to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Pantheon, St. Peter’s Basilica, Sistine Chapel, Notre Dame, Chartres, Lourdes, and more. The cinematography’s quality brings these locations to life.

Cathedral is telling the story

Marc Laudonio, director of evangelization and catechesis at the Cathedral Parish, immediately recognized the ability for Catholicism to “palpably reveal what and why we believe; our senses encounter the faith in what might be the best-ever film on the Catholic faith.”

The Cathedral Parish will present the entire series, both film and study, beginning in October at St. Patrick Church. Participants will be eligible for intermediate or advanced level Seat of Wisdom credits.

The series is offered to two groups, one during the day, the other at night. People are asked to register by October 4 for one group:

  • Monday evenings: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., St. Patrick Church, 404 E. Main St., Madison
    • Sessions 1-6: October 17 to November 21
    • Sessions 7-11: January 9 to February 6
  • Wednesday afternoons: 1 to 3 p.m., St. Patrick Church, 404 E. Main St., Madison
    • Sessions 1-6: October 19 to November 23
    • Sessions 7-11: January 11 to February 8

Cost is $30 for study guide. To register, contact Marc Laudonio, 608-257-5000 or [email protected]
