NEW YORK CITY — Fr. Dennis William Hickey, CSP, 74, of New York City died on September 29 at Mary Manning Walsh Home in New York City after a valiant battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Born on May 22, 1940, in Janesville, Wis., he was the son of the late George M. Hickey and Lois Keene Hickey. In high school and college, he was an accomplished scholar in classics, receiving numerous awards, including the Presidential Award in Classics at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis.

After graduate studies in Greek and Latin at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., he would go on to teach Latin in various high schools across the country.

At age 31, he joined the Paulist Fathers and earned a Master of Divinity degree from the Washington Theological Union in 1975. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 15, 1976, at St. Paul the Apostle Church in New York City.

Father Hickey served in a variety of Paulist ministries throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. In 1998, he returned to the Paulist Mother Church in New York City, St. Paul the Apostle. Father Hickey will be remembered for the gift of hospitality and welcome that he extended to all he met.

He is predeceased by his brother, Michael, and survived by his sister, Mary Hickey Weiss and brother-in-law Donald Weiss.

Friends and family will gather at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 8 Columbus Ave., New York, N.Y., on Friday, Oct. 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Church followed by interment at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Oak Ridge, N.J.
