A Godless Nation

“If you don’t behave as you believe, you will end by believing as you behave.” — Venerable Fulton J. Sheen

In my humble mind of seeing how the citizens of the United States are on “the slippery slope” of not believing in God and thus they believe in “nothing”.

The fatal decision by the United States Supreme Court on June 25, 1962, which declared school-sponsored prayers unconstitutional in the landmark case of Engel v. Vitale.

I was 12 years old at the time, and I can remember my Dad saying “this decision by the U. S. Supreme Court “should never have happened.”

We now have many young people, generation after generation who do not believe in God, do not attend church on Sunday, and therefore they believe in nothing as stated by Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen.

I wonder how many of our young people who graduate from high schools all across this nation even know how to pray, do they know the “Pledge of Allegiance,” or even have sung the following patriotic songs; “America (My Country, Tis of Thee),” “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “America the Beautiful,” “God Bless America,” and “This Land is Your Land.”

Would it not be a different culture and society, if every Catholic individual or family attended Mass on Sunday, went to Confession at least once a month, and spent Sunday “as the Lord’s Day”?

Founding Father John Adams said: “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other”.

As a Catholic who believes in everything the Catholic Church teaches and why the Church exists: “To worship and honor God, to save souls for Christ, and to serve the poor.”  We do not need the federal government to be the “supreme being” of our lives.

I used to say “God bless America” but unfortunately I can no longer say that quote, but I now pray “May God have mercy on our nation”.
