New chief of staff in diocese

MADISON — Michael Wick has started in his role as the new chief of staff in the Diocese of Madison.

Wick is taking on many of the duties formerly performed by longtime Director of the Diocesan Curia Eric Schiedermayer, who will continue in a part-time role with the diocese handling projects pertaining to planning as well as information technology.

Wick comes to the Diocese of Madison after serving as chief of staff in the Diocese of Gary for the past five years, the first of those years with Bishop Donald J. Hying of Madison during his time in Gary.

His prior roles also include executive director and director of operations with the Institute of Religious Life.

“Coming to Madison is like beginning a new chapter of my life,” said Wick.

“With the passing of my beloved wife Bianca in 2021, I readily accepted the invitation to once again work with Bishop Hying.”

He added, “After 37 years, it is wonderful to be back in my home state of Wisconsin. I still have some family in the Milwaukee area . . . For me, it will be a grace-filled opportunity to reconnect with old friends and to make new ones as I get to know the priests and faithful spread over 11 counties and 8,070 square miles.”

Wick said he’s most excited to “build upon and expand the recent efforts to ‘go make disciples’ and to help discern a plan to effectively put out ‘into the deep’ as we boldly look to the future.

“Under Bishop Hying’s leadership and inspired by his own personal witness to holiness, we must strive to be instruments of conversion and agents of transformation. All that is needed is to simply embrace the gifts and graces we have as Catholics and boldly invite others to experience the joy of the Gospel.”
