Parishes sponsor discussion on ‘Faithful Citizenship’

MCFARLAND — Catholics and others interested in responsibly integrating their political action with their faith life are invited to attend an upcoming presentation and discussion.

Three area parishes will offer “The 2012 Elections and Catholics” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Christ the King Parish in McFarland. St. Ann Parish in Stoughton and Holy Mother of Consolation Parish in Oregon are joining Christ the King Parish to sponsor the event at the McFarland church, 5306 Main St.

John Huebscher, executive director of the Wisconsin Catholic Conference (WCC), will present and lead the discussion. The focus of the presentation will be on the principles of Catholic social teaching and important documents intended to help Catholics think and act in the political realm in ways consistent with their faith.

Pope Benedict XVI has written that the Catholic Church is not a political power or party. It is a moral power.

To assist Catholics in making good moral, political decisions, the American bishops published in 2007 a guide titled “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States.” The bishops’ document has been recently updated for this important political year.

The WCC has published “Guidelines for Church Involvement in Electoral Politics,” a document that clarifies appropriate efforts for Catholic agencies during political campaigns. The guide emphasizes that the Church must be independent of any candidate, political party, or faction.

Catholics have a rich tradition of social teaching that emphasizes the right to life and the dignity of the human person; a call to family, community, and participation; rights and responsibilities; the option for the poor and vulnerable; the dignity of work and the rights of workers; solidarity; and caring for God’s creation.

All are welcome. Pre-registration is not required. Call the Christ the King Parish office at 608-838-9797 for more information.
